Ohio High School Shooting's at-the-scene videos

February 27, 2012, 12:45 pm
On WKYC, Lt. John Hiscox Jr. of the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office discusses the school shooting at Chardon High School in northeastern Ohio.
One student has died and four students were injured after they were shot in the cafeteria at Chardon High School in northeastern Ohio on Monday morning by what law enforcement officials said was a lone gunman now in police custody.
The gunman fled the high school building but was captured by the police nearby, reported John Horton for The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. He said a teacher had witnessed the shooting and chased the gunman, who escaped the building before he was caught.
Video of the suspect’s arrest was captured by a Cleveland television station, WKYC, which is providing live coverage.
Parents descended on the school grounds after many were notified of the shooting via text messages from their children. The Plain Dealer reported that one parent, Jeannette Roth, said her son had told her the shooting took place in the cafeteria while the students were having breakfast. Ms. Roth said a boy suddenly “stood up and started shooting, and then it was chaos.”
Students in the cafeteria fled to classrooms that were locked for safety. The school remained on lock-down until around 8:30 a.m., when students began evacuating to a nearby elementary school. Family members were instructed to meet their children.
A local television reporter at the scene interviewed a grandfather who was picking up his grandson.

Local reports say some of the injured students were evacuated to hospitals in Cleveland. At a noon press conference, authorities said that one of the injured children had died. The extent of the injuries of the four other students is not known at this time.
The F.B.I. is now on the scene, assisting local law enforcement officials.

The students were injured when a gunman opened fire in the cafeteria at Chardon High School, the FBI said, which was busy at breakfast time.
Two of the injured were taken by helicopter to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, and three others went by ambulance to Cleveland Hospital.

Local news reports said the gunman was chased out of the building by a teacher before turning himself in to two people in the vicinity of the school.
"I am happy to tell you that the student that did the shooting is captured," a sheriff's official said to reporters at the scene.
"He actually turned himself in to a couple of innocent bystanders just north of the city here in Chardon township."
Some students said they recognised the shooter, and have described him as a classmate.
One boy who was in the cafeteria at when gunfire broke out told US news channel MSNBC: "I thought it was firecrackers at first, I wasn't sure.
"And then I saw a bunch of people running out. So I started running... I heard someone yell behind me: 'Get down'. And I heard a bunch of shots fired behind me."
Lockdown
Students were evacuated to a nearby elementary school, where parents flocked to collect them. Chardon High School has about 1,100 pupils.
Officials from a number of law enforcement authorities are on the scene.
A special operations team is said to be combing the school, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has sent a team of eight agents to trace the firearm.
Other schools in the Chardon area were locked down as the investigation began, reports say.
Chardon, a town of about 5,000 residents, is located about 30 miles (48km) east of the city of Cleveland.
