Hugo Chávez Dies, Leaving a Bitterly Divided Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela died Tuesday afternoon after a struggle with cancer, the government announced, leaving behind a bitterly divided nation in the grip of a political crisis that grew more acute as he languished for weeks, silent and out of sight, in hospitals in Havana and Caracas. Close to tears and his voice cracking, Vice President Nicolás Maduro said he and other officials had gone to the military hospital where Mr. Chávez was being treated, sequestered from the public, when “we received the hardest and most tragic information that we could transmit to our people.”
In short order, police officers and soldiers were highly visible as people ran through the streets, calling loved ones on cellphones, rushing to get home. Caracas, the capital, which had just received news that the government was throwing out two American military attachés it accused of sowing disorder, quickly became an enormous traffic jam. Stores and shopping malls abruptly closed.
As darkness fell, somber crowds congregated in the main square of Caracas and at the military hospital, with men and women crying openly in sadness and fear about what would come next.
In one neighborhood, Chávez supporters set fire to tents and mattresses used by university students who had chained themselves together in protest several days earlier to demand more information about Mr. Chávez’s condition.
“Are you happy now?” the Chávez supporters shouted as they ran through the streets with sticks. “Chávez is dead! You got what you wanted!”
Mr. Chávez’s departure from a country he dominated for 14 years casts into doubt the future of his socialist revolution. It alters the political balance not only in Venezuela, the fourth-largest supplier of foreign oil to the United States, but also in Latin America, where Mr. Chávez led a group of nations intent on reducing American influence in the region.
Mr. Chávez, 58, changed Venezuela in fundamental ways, empowering and energizing millions of poor people who had felt marginalized and excluded, and his death is sure to bring vast uncertainty as the nation tries to find its way without its central figure.
“He’s the best president in history,” said Andrés Mejía, 65, a retiree in Cumaná, an eastern city, crying as he gathered with friends in a plaza. “Look at how emotional I am — I’m crying. I cannot accept the president’s death. But the revolution will continue with Maduro.”
The Constitution says that, since Mr. Chávez was at the start of a term, the nation should “proceed to a new election” within 30 days, and Foreign Minister Elías Jaua said in a television interview that Mr. Maduro would take the helm in the meantime. The election is likely to pit Mr. Maduro, whom Mr. Chávez designated as his political successor, against Henrique Capriles Radonski, a young state governor who lost to Mr. Chávez in the presidential election in October.
But in light of Mr. Chávez’s illness, there has been heated debate in recent months over clashing interpretations of the Constitution, and it is impossible to predict how the transition will proceed.
“We, your civilian and military companions, Commander Hugo Chávez, assume your legacy, your challenges, your project, accompanied by and with the support of the people,” Mr. Maduro told the nation.
Only hours earlier, the government seemed to go into a state of heightened alert as Mr. Maduro convened a crisis meeting in Caracas of cabinet ministers, governors loyal to the president and top military commanders.
Taking a page out of Mr. Chávez’s time-tested playbook, Mr. Maduro warned in a lengthy televised speech that the United States was seeking to destabilize the country, and the government expelled the two American military attachés, accusing one of seeking to recruit Venezuelan military personnel to carry out “destabilizing projects.” He called on Venezuelans to unite as he raised the specter of foreign intervention.
During the speech, Mr. Maduro said the government suspected that the president’s enemies had found a way to cause his cancer, a possibility that Mr. Chávez had once raised. Mr. Maduro said scientists should investigate the source of his illness.
Mr. Chávez long accused the United States of trying to undermine or even assassinate him; indeed, the Bush administration gave tacit support for a coup that briefly removed him from power in 2002. He often used Washington as a foil to build support or distract attention from deeply rooted problems at home, like high inflation and soaring crime.
Over nearly a decade and a half, Mr. Chávez made most major decisions and dominated all aspects of political life. He inspired a fierce, sometimes religious devotion among his supporters and an equally fervent animus among his opponents. As many of his followers say, “With Chávez everything, without Chávez nothing.”
But that leaves his revolution in a precarious spot without its charismatic leader.
Mr. Chávez’s death could provide an opportunity for the political opposition, which was never able to defeat him in a head-to-head contest. Mr. Capriles lost to Mr. Chávez by 11 percentage points in October.
And Mr. Maduro is far from having Mr. Chávez’s visceral connection to the masses of Venezuela’s poor. Even so, most analysts believe that Mr. Maduro will have an advantage, and that he will receive a surge of support if the vote occurs soon.
But even if Mr. Maduro prevails, he may have a hard time holding together Mr. Chávez’s movement while fending off resistance from what is likely to be a revived opposition.
Mr. Chávez’s new six-year term began on Jan. 10, with the president incommunicado in Havana. In his absence, the government held a huge rally in the center of Caracas, where thousands of his followers raised their hands to pledge an oath of “absolute loyalty” to their commander and his revolution. Officials promised that Mr. Chávez would have his inauguration later, when he had recovered.
But the hoped-for recovery never came. Now, instead of an inauguration, Mr. Chávez’s followers are left to plan a funeral.
The foreign minister, Mr. Jaua, announced that on Wednesday Mr. Chávez’s body would be taken to the military academy in Caracas and lie in state there.
Mr. Jaua said that the government would hold a ceremony on Friday with visiting heads of state and that officials would announce later where Mr. Chávez would be laid to rest.

Turbaned Tornado Fauja Singh, world’s oldest marathoner, retires at 101

Fauja Singh after his last race
in Hongkong
For the world’s oldest marathon man, the final finish line is nigh. Two months short of his 102nd birthday, Fauja Singh hanged up his racing shoes after completing the 10km race that was held in conjunction with the annual Hong Kong Marathon today. “Racing is getting very tough for me,” Singh said, speaking through an interpreter in Hong Kong (he is a British national but only speaks Punjabi). “I have mixed feelings but I feel I must retire on a high.
“I am hurt by the fact that I am going to retire. I do not really like the word ‘retire’ because I can still run and jump on a bus. It’s a sense of negativity that I have never experienced before.
“I fear that when I stop running, people will no longer love me. At the moment, everyone loves me. I hope nobody will forget or ignore me. When you become old, you become like a child and you want the attention.” Singh has certainly not lacked attention. Indeed, Adidas used the turbaned Sikh alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali in their “Impossible is nothing” advertising campaign. Singh was born in Punjab on 1 April 1911. He emigrated to England in the 1990s and lives with one of his sons in Ilford. He is the eldest member of a group of Indian-born East End runners called “Sikhs in the City”.
He ran his first marathon in 2000 and clocked his fastest time at the 26.2-mile distance, 5hr 40min 04sec, in Toronto in 2003. He was 92 at the time. He completed the 2011 race in Toronto, as a 100-year-old, in 8hr 11min 06sec.
Though “the Turbaned Tornado” bows out from competitive racing today, he intends to keep on running for fun in training. “Running is my life,” Singh said. “I will keep running to inspire the masses and for my personal health. I will keep running for at least four hours daily.” “I have said before that I will carry on running as it keeps me alive. The reason for my good health is that I exercise daily and follow a proper diet regime. I take happiness in the biggest portions, though my actual diet is very small,” he said.
"Nowadays, people are more interested in going to a gym, but I feel that if they exercise regularly on their own they can be physically and mentally strong. Daily exercise will keep you away from all diseases."
Singh, who stands 5ft 8in, says he does not suffer from any physical ailments. A torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics, his one regret is not being able to speak and read English.
He emigrated to England in the 1990s but is a little foggy on the exact year. "I cannot remember for sure," he said. "I used to visit my children in England in the 1980s and eventually settled for good in the 1990s. I moved to England as a way of overcoming a traumatic time in my life. My family thought it best." The trauma was caused by the deaths of his wife and two of their children.

Turbaned Tornado
  • Fauja Singh, nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado,” finished the Hong Kong marathon’s 10-kilometre race in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. It was his last race
  • Singh became the oldest man to run a full marathon at Toronto in 2011. But his record was not recognised by Guinness World Records as he didn’t have a birth certificate to prove his age
  • In 1999, at the age of 89, he decided to run marathons for charities. His first charity was for premature babies.

Afzal Guru hanged in Tihar; Curfew imposed in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Entire Kashmir valley has been placed under strict curfew in the wake of the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in the wee hours of Saturday.

Incidentally, chief minister Omar Abdullah was in New Delhi on Friday and reports said that he was himself caught unawares about the rejection of the mercy plea of Afzal Guru by President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday. Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had promised that he would dispose of the file soon after took over the charge of home ministry last year.

Importantly, Supreme Court had ordered hanging of Guru in 2004, after he was charged of attack on the Parliament in 2001 but Guru's wife made an appeal to the President for mercy after his execution was scheduled in 2006 till then the mercy petition was pending with the President's office.

The reports from New Delhi said that President Pranab Mukherjee rejected the mercy plea on January 23, 2013 and hanging took place at 8am on Saturday, inside the Tihar jail where the convict was lodged, the sources added.

Nine people including security men and officials of the Parliament were killed when Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists attacked the Parliament in 2001 and Afzal Guru was held responsible for conspiracy and helping the perpetrators even several of the Kashmiris based in New Delhi were picked up for questioning but later on released after court observed that they were not involved in the crime.

The authorities in Srinagar and other major towns of the valley had announcements through loudspeakers to remain indoors after the Fajr Nimaz and heavy deployment of para-military and police was placed in the sensitive areas of miasuma locality in uptown besides areas in down town, the reports said.

The authorities have even closed the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for the day to avert the trouble. Large number of para-military personnel have deployed outside the houses of the separatist leaders to prevent them from coming out on the streets to instigate trouble in the valley, the reports said.

Reports said, Srinagar residents are informing one another on phone about the imposition of curfew in the valley and trying to know the situation in their respective areas.

Incidentally, the hanging of Guru came two days earlier on February 11 when JKLF activists were preparing to observe "Martyr's day" for the hanging of their founder leader Maqbool Bhat , who was hanged to death in Tihar jail on February 11 in 1983 after he was held guilty of killing bank manger in border district of Kupwara in bank robbery case.

The separatist leaders and the mainstream politicians were averse to hanging of Guru and the chief minister Omar Abdullah wanted that his hanging should be delayed for the time being during his rule in the state.

Afzal Guru, who hailed from Sopore in north Kashmir was a Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist and was sentenced to death by the SC in 2002 after he was found guilty of 2001 Parliament attack.

While some sources say that Azal Guru's mercy appeal was rejected on Friday but some sources say that it was rejected by the President on January 23, 2013.

Initially, Afzal Guru was a part of JKLF terrorist outfit. Guru, according to his own interviews with various newspapers, had admitted that he rejoined militancy after one Tariq Ahmad of Anantnag motivated him to join jehad for liberation of Kashmir by launching attacks on various embassies and Indian institutions. Tariq, according to Guru's own version introduced him to one Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist in Ghaziabad in Pakistan, who motivated him to launch an attack on the Parliament.
