Five things that remind NRI's of India

To say that we live in a globalized world where Indians are found in every imaginable corner of the world would be understating the facts. Indians can be found everywhere. Only last week, a young man who was a past tenant had come to collect the post. Two minutes into our conversation and he turned out to be from India and by great luck from my city. Boy was I delighted!

It is these little things that give you immense joy, of finding that connect when you are abroad. Many Indians have adopted other countries as their base. Their link with their country of origin may be limited to yearly or two- yearly visits but considering the economical calling rates today, keeping in touch is not a problem at all. Besides the traditional telephonic conversations, there are innumerable ways of being there mentally and physically (if you consider videos and images as physical manifestations)- Facebook, twitter, chat and hordes of other social networking links. Foreign shores are no longer alien; no land is the stuff of English textbook chapters any more. These days it is all about, although there may be some who do not agree with this view, blending in. You can adopt and adapt as much as you like but there are certain things that remind you of India with unerring nostalgia.

Food
You can eat at all the sushi you want with all the chopsticks you can handle, wrap up the noodles around your fork, and lick the white sauce from your fingers with that Western sophistication which makes it look like a superior work of art. The aroma of daal chawal still, however, makes you want to go back to sitting cross legged and caring a hoot for all worldly etiquettes.

Marriage
Marriage is another important occasion which reminds an Indian of his or her roots, quite literally and unequivocally. No arguments against the 'Big Fat Indian Wedding' or at least the idea of some such thing. It starts from the outfits, which are procured from shopping sojourns to India or doubly expensive purchases of just about bearable copies of the originals. Ethnic jewelry is a must. The rituals are carried out with amazing detailing, sometimes even surpassing their original fastidiousness.

Festivals
Festivals are a time when the Non Resident Indian relives his traditions along with religious fervor. Whether it is Navratri, Holi, Eid or Christmas, festivals are cause for celebration for an Indian, even if he or she is not in India physically. That is because subconsciously, it is about being connected across the mental planes; of vivid recollections of festival times in India and trying to emulate the same in dress, rituals, food and festivities

Bollywood
Bollywood is an all- year, all- time favourite entertainment for Indians and, given its global influence, for people of all nationalities. Whether it is the latest movie to hit theatres or the promotional visits of Bollywood stars, NRI's feel a sense of pride and joy on aligning themselves with India's rich and famous.

Cricket
Cricket brings out the patriotic flavor, the joy of being Indian. This was evident especially in the last World Cup when Indians across the world took to the streets to celebrate India's win with ecstasy. There is a dearth of Indian talent in other sports but the rare Saina Nehwal, Vijendra Singh and Sania Mirza also bring out the feeling of pride of sharing the same origins.

Indian-origin girls get top honours at Google Science Fair

BOSTON: Two Indian-origin girls have emerged winners at Google's inaugural Science Fair, impressing thousands at the internet giant's California headquarters with their projects on ways to improve ovarian cancer treatment and bettering air quality for the benefit of asthma patients.

The top three winners out of 15 finalists at the fair were all girls, Shree Bose, Naomi Shah and Lauren Hodge, prompting Google to laud "girl power" at the fair.

"The unifying elements of all three young women were their intellectual curiosity, their tenaciousness and their ambition to use science to find solutions to big problems," Cristin Frodella from Google's Education Team said in a blog post.

The finalists examined complex problems and found simple solutions that can be implemented by the general public--like changing cooking habits or removing toxins from homes, Frodella said.

Bose, who won in the 17-18 age group was also named the 'Grand Prize' winner, taking home a 50,000 dollar scholarship and an internship opportunity at the prestigious Geneva-based CERN institute.

Bose impressed judges, more than 1,000 local attendees as well as Googlers with her project to "improve ovarian cancer treatment for patients when they have built up a resistance to certain chemotherapy drugs".

Apart from the scholarship, Bose also won a trip to the Galapagos Islands with a National Geographic Explorer.

Terming Bose's work as "groundbreaking discovery which could have wider implications for cancer research," Google said she came up with complex solutions that can be addressed in labs by doctors and researchers.

Shah won in the 15-16 age group for her "endeavour to prove that making changes to indoor environments that improve indoor air quality can reduce people's reliance on asthma medications".

Hodge was named winner in the 13-14 age group for studying the effect of different marinades on the level of potentially harmful carcinogens in grilled chicken.

Shah and Hodge each received 25,000 dollar scholarships and internships at Google and toy company LEGO.

All three were awarded lifetime digital subscriptions to science magazine Scientific American.

Kurukshetra man shot dead by African-American in US

CHANDIGARH: Having left home with 'dollar dreams' in his eyes, a 30-year-old man from Kurukshetra fell to the bullet of an African-American in a town in Indiana state of United States on Monday night.

This happened when Deepak was returning home from the mall where he was employed.

A pall of gloom descended on the victim's residence in New Laxman Colony of Kurukshetra, after getting a phone call from Indiana police on Tuesday morning. "We have come to know that he was returning home when a group of African-Americans opened fire on him, killing him on the spot," said his younger brother Pardeep.

The eldest child of Sharawan, a small-time businessman, Deepak was a bachelor and had gone to the US last year.

"We have lost everything; we just want his body back. Some of our relatives have gone to the US embassy in Delhi to inquire about the process to be followed. We wish the government would help us," Pardeep said.

Check illegal immigrants, Malaysia tells Punjab

Patiala, July 13
Following a letter to Punjab Chief Secretary SC Agrawal by the Protector General of Emigrants (PGE) Vinay Sahni pertaining to the increasing number of illegal Indian immigrants in Malaysia, the district police and DCs have been asked to check the menace.

The PGE has further clarified that if the illegal Indian immigrants continue to enter Malaysia, the Malaysian Government may impose a ban on the Indian workers, as it had done in the case of the Bangladeshi workers.
“The Malaysian Government is alarmed at the rise of the cases of human trafficking from India and this is beginning to have a direct impact on our efforts to rescue and repatriate the Indian nationals from Malaysia,” states the letter, in possession of The Tribune.
The Punjab Home Department has also asked all the DCs and police chiefs of the state to ensure that no Punjab resident uses unfair means to go abroad, especially Malaysia. Documents available with The Tribune suggest that the Indian High Commissioner, Kuala Lumpur, had shot a letter to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs conveying its concern over the number of suspected human trafficking cases.
“A Malaysian court had recently sentenced 19 Indian citizens for human trafficking. In an earlier case, 27 Indian nationals were rescued by the High Commission after intervention,” reads a part of the letter.
Meanwhile, numerous Punjab residents have allegedly been using Malaysia as a transit route to gain entry into Pakistan without getting the same mentioned on their passport.
