‘Fraud’ by Country Club

Chandigarh, February 5
High drama was witnessed at the Aroma hotel when some residents of Mohali alleged that they had been duped by a private company here. The residents alleged that the owner of Country Club had duped them after receiving a total of Rs 20,000 in 2000 from each person on the pretext of providing membership of the club. A total of 618 applied for the membership.
“In 2000, the manager of the company (Rajiv Reddy) came to Mohali and allotted us the slips of membership but later we found that it was a fraud,” said Harminder Singh.
Officials of the club said: “We do not know what happened 11 years ago. We have its franchisee and we are working for it,” said an official.

LIC Housing slapped Rs 20,000 fine

Failure to issue sale certificate to a Mohali resident
Chandigarh, February 5
District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on LIC Housing Finance Ltd. (opposite party no. 1) for its failure to issue the sale certificate to a Mohali resident.

The forum, comprising president PD Goel and members Rajinder Singh Gill and Madanjit Kaur Sahota, has also directed the opposite parties to issue the sale certificate in favour of the complainant alone in respect of the properties and to further register the same in the office of the Sub-Registrar, Dera Bassi. The respondents have been directed to pay Rs 10,000 as litigation costs.
The complainant, Satish Kumar Saini, submitted that he, along with Jasbir Kaur, a resident of Sector 40-B, Chandigarh (opposite party no. 2), in response to the sale notice for the sale of six residential properties of opposite party no. 1 situated at Dera Bassi on June 19, 2007, showed their interest in purchasing the same on March 15, 2008. However, the opposite party no. 2 changed her mind and backed out of the aforesaid proposal. Consequently, the opposite party no. 1 entered into an agreement with him on April 15, 2008, and paid the entire consideration amount whereupon the opposite party no. 1 issued the “No Due Certificate” in his favour on March 31, 2009.
He alleged that the opposite party was supposed to issue and execute the sale certificate in his favour, which they failed to do, despite repeated requests. It was also averred that he had further executed an agreement to sell in favour of Ram Piari, a resident of Dera Bassi (opposite party no. 3), on February 7, 2011, and he could not execute the sale deed in favour of the opposite party no. 3 which was due on April 30, 2011.
The counsel for the opposite party no. 1 pleaded that the opposite party no.2 never backed-out from the proposal executed on March 15, 2008 and had written various letters showing her interest to get the sale deed registered in her name. She had paid Rs 8 lakh on April 29, 2008, out of the total consideration amount of Rs 12,75,770. It was alleged that the complainant had manipulated the original documents, as the opposite party had already issued the full and final payment certificate on April 18, 2009, jointly in the name of the complainant as well as the opposite party no 2. It is further clarified that the various sale certificates in the joint name of the complainant and the opposite party No. 2 were ready; but they did not turn up to receive them.
The opposite party no. 2 pleaded that there was no occasion for her to back out from the deal. She was the co-owner in the property to the extent of 2/3rd share, as she had paid a sum of Rs 8 lakh, out of the total sale consideration of Rs 12,75,770, whereas, the complainant had paid only an amount of Rs 4.55 lakh. It was asserted that the agreement to sell, dated 15.4.2008, and No Due Certificate dated 31.03.2009, are forged and fabricated documents.
The opposite party no. 3 initially appeared in person but subsequently did not turn up. Therefore she was proceeded against exparte vide order dated April 26, 2011. The forum said once the opposite party no. 1 had issued the No Due Certificate, then they were legally bound to execute/issue the sale certificate in favour of the complainant in respect to the properties.

Residents’ no to linking car sale to parking space

Chandigarh, February 5
Representatives of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) are totally disagreed to the plans of the UT Administration of allowing the sale of car to only those who have parking space outside their houses. The representatives raised objections to the proposal discussed during a meeting of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (FOSWAC) held today. The issue is a part of the agenda for controlling traffic congestion, which would be discussed by the Administrator’s Advisory Council at a meeting scheduled for February 9.
The chairman sought the members’ views on the points of the agenda mainly relating to traffic congestion to be taken up at the scheduled Administrator’s Advisory Council meeting.
Some members residing in CHB multi-storeyed flats expressed their reservation in linking the purchase of vehicles to the availability of parking space as no such parking space has been provided or earmarked by the CHB authorities, especially for those living in the upper floors.
Many members were of the view that the restriction on the purchase of vehicle in the city will encourage the purchase of vehicle from the adjoining towns of neighbouring states depriving the city of tax revenue.
Suggesting a way out, the members stressed the need of providing multi-level parkings in commercial areas and community parkings in residential areas to solve the problem of traffic congestion.
While discussing the other issues SS Bhardwaj of RWA- Sector 51 and JC Verma of RWA-Sector 40 C said the CHB authorities had created four zones for carrying out survey to list out the violations or need-based changes made by the occupants of these small houses all these years under the nose of the enforcement staff. They apprehended that after the survey, notices would be issued to the occupants and demolition may also follow. They suggested for holding a meeting with the Chairman of the CHB to sort out this issue.
The RWA members expressed their concern about the poor functioning of the Primary Schools and Health Centres transferred to the MCC by the administration some times back due to a shortage of teachers, doctors and insufficient infrastructure.

Happy Birthday: Facebook turns 8

Facebook may seem like it has been around for quite some time, but the company is only eight years old today. Happy Birthday Facebook!

Facebook, the world’s most popular social network, launched on February 4, 2004. That year, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was planning to sell Facebook off to a bigger company, but he ended up building it into a multi-billion dollar business instead, which just filed to go public two days ago. As of December 31, 2011, Facebook has over 845 million monthly users, over 483 million daily users, and over 425 million mobile users. Today, the company is eight years old. Happy Birthday Facebook!
While Mark Zuckerberg is best known as the man who built Facebook, the company has three other co-founders, all college roommates and fellow students of Harvard University: Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The four initially built the service exclusively for Harvard students, but it was soon expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. They gradually added support for students at various other universities, and eventually expanded to allow for high school students as well. Now, anyone aged 13 and over can register on the social network.
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) mandates websites that collect information about users (like Facebook) aren’t allowed to sign on anyone under the age of 13. Currently, millions of Facebook users are below the minimum age and the company admits there is no single solution for enforcing age restrictions. Zuckerberg believes, however, the age limit should be removed.
As part of its IPO this week, Facebook didn’t just release numbers, but pictures as well. One of them was a blurry timeline of the company’s history, which I’ve transcribed for you below:

The name “Facebook” stems from the term used for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by some university administrations in the U.S. Facebook, the service, has completely transformed our definition of “facebook” the word. Instead of denoting a physical book used infrequently by millions of American students, it now refers to a social network frequently used by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Happy Birthday Facebook.

Facebook Birthday: Social Network Turns 8

Happy Birthday Facebook
Facebook turns 8
Houston, February 5
Facebook, the world's most popular social networking site with an estimated 845 million active subscribers, has turned eight.
Since its launch on February 4, 2004 at Harvard University in Mark Zuckberg's dormitory room, the social networking giant that has changed our lives over the years has witnessed massive growth and is most likely to have one billion users by August this year.
While, the company CEO Zuckerberg is best known as the man who built Facebook, the company has three other co- founders, all college roommates and fellow students at Harvard; Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.
The four initially built the service exclusively for Harvard students, but it was soon expanded to other colleges and eventually added support for students at various other universities.
Initially before it's public launch, it was called 'thefacebook.com'. However, on February 4, 2008, Zukerberg renamed to domain name and launched what we know today as 'Facebook'.
It now seems almost impossible to imagine life without Facebook status updates, friend requests, relationship statuses or photo tags.
Facebook has not only put Zukerberg in the list of top and youngest millionaires but also helped a lot of start ups, non profits and other companies grow, interact and increase sales.
In January 2009, Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users.
Quantcast estimates Facebook has 138.9 million monthly unique US visitors in May 2011. In India, Facebook has registered a growth of 132 per cent this year.
845mn SUBSCRIBERS
  • The website was launched on February 4, 2004, at Harvard University in Mark Zuckberg's dormitory room
  • It has an estimated 845 million active subscribers
  • The company has three other co-founders Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes
  • Initially, the service was meant exclusively for Harvard students, but later it became popular the world over

On February 1, the company filed a Form S-1 with the SEC in preparation for an IPO worth $5 billion. Some speculate that once Facebook begins trading publicly, it could be valued as high as $100 billion.
According to Facebook's S-1, the company pulled in a whopping $1 billion in net profit on $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011. But much of Facebook's success has come from building a better user experience and resisting the temptation to make fast money. Indeed, the S-1 featured a section titled "The Hacker Way," a declaration by Mark Zuckerberg, who wrote that the company's mantra has long been to focus on delivering features first and improving later.
WIth over 800 million members worldwide, it's pretty amazing how Facebook has grown and changed our lives over the years.
It now seems almost impossible to imagine life without witty status updates, friend requests, relationship statuses or photo tags.
Users became even more attached to the site after the company rolled out interactive features like chat, the timeline and the subscription button.
Some might even say the site resembles a digital resume, especially since now you can turn your timeline into business cards.
Even more notable is how Facebook expanded internationally. Available in over 70 languages, 80% of the company's monthly users are from outside the U.S. and Canada.

Happy Birthday, Facebook!

Yuvraj has cancer; undergoing chemo in US

Chandigarh, February 5
The moment you think about India’s ODI World Cup win last year, the one image that hits you is of a charged up Yuvraj Singh. People remember the flamboyance, the flair, the all-round show he put up in the premier one-day tournament. But what is forgotten is that just before that, he was struggling to break into the playing eleven on a regular basis. Questions had started cropping up on whether he had lost focus.
The dashing southpaw replied with his bat, and with lots of grit. But now he has a bigger battle at hand and he will have to fight harder, much harder.
It has been revealed that Yuvraj, who was earlier said to have a non-malignant lung tumor, is suffering from cancer. Currently, he is undergoing chemotherapy at Cancer Research Institute in Boston.
The news means a massive blow to Team India and all its fans as the Chandigarh lad was expected to be back in the team early this year after he had almost made himself available for the ongoing ODI tri-series in Australia before opting out at the last moment.
Dr Jatin Chaudhary, Yuvraj’s physiotherapist, said: “It is a rare tumour and is cancerous but it has been detected in stage one itself. Doctors had to decide whether to continue medication or go for chemotherapy but since parts of the tumour are just above the artery of his heart, there was a danger that while running, it could burst. But it is 100 per cent curable."
His family and friends remained unavailable for comment throughout the day. In November last year, it was Yuvraj’s mother Shabnam who had tweeted about her son’s illness while he was training at the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore.
The cancer, according to Dr Chaudhary, was detected by a Russian doctor. The flamboyant batsman has been responding well to chemotherapy. Yuvraj has also undergone Ayurveda medication and, as a result, will have to undergo lesser sessions of chemotherapy.
Dr Chaudhary added that it was due to wrong diagnosis earlier that the disease took longer to be detected.
Yuvraj’s career had got a fresh lease of life last year as making a comeback into the Indian team, he put in an amazing display to help India win the ODI World Cup after a gap of 28 years. He was adjudged the Player of the Tournament and many remember captain MS Dhoni and Yuvraj breaking into tears at the Wankhede pitch after India won the final and the coveted trophy.
It is expected that Yuvraj will recover fully from the ailment by May and should be available for selection soon after. “End of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then. After that it is just some rehabilitation in April before he is fit to be back on the field in May,” Dr Chaudhary added.

Delay in SGPC chief’s election

Chandigarh, February 5
A delegation of Akali MPs will meet Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on the issue of election of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president. The SAD core committee, that met here today, expressed concern at the delay in the matter and termed it as a “deliberate and unwanted interference” by the Centre in Sikh affairs.
The SGPC House was constituted on December 5, but a notification calling the House to elect the SGPC president is yet to be issued.
In the meantime, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has decided a petition in favour of Sehajdhari Sikhs who were denied the right to vote in the September 18 elections.
The federation is demanding that the SGPC House be nullified and fresh elections be held before the SGPC president is appointed. It is also demanding that an administrator be appointed to run the SGPC affairs till the elections are held again.
After core committee members expressed displeasure at the delay in completing the SGPC election process, it was decided that a resolution be passed expressing the party sentiments on the issue and to convey the same to the PM.
Further, the committee discussed the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee (DGMC) elections, which are to be held on March 11. The SAD has empowered SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Parkash Singh Badal to form various committees to chalk out the party’s campaign strategy.
A meeting will be held in Delhi on February 9 to discuss the issue of ticket distribution for the DSGMC elections. Senior SAD leaders from Delhi were present at today’s meeting. The DGMC has 55 members, nine of them nominated. In the last elections, the SAD had won 18 seats but with eight members defecting to the Congress-backed Sarna group, the party was left with 10 sitting members.

India justifies UN vote on Syria

New Delhi, February 5
India justified its backing of the UN resolution on Syria that called on President Bashar Assad to step down, saying its decision was in accordance with its support for the efforts by the Arab League for a peaceful resolution of the crisis through a Syria-led inclusive political process.
''We believe that the leadership of Syria is a matter for the Syrian people to decide. It would be necessary for all opposition forces in Syria to peacefully engage in a constructive dialogue with the authorities. We hope this will create a new environment for peace and facilitate a political process. This political dialogue should build upon the political reforms already announced by the Syrian leadership with necessary changes so that they find acceptance among all sections of Syrian society,'' India's representative to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri said in an explanatory note.
The Arab League-backed resolution, which was aimed at putting pressure on Syria to end its 11-month crackdown on anti-government protests, was vetoed by Russia and China.
The US, France, Britain and Pakistan were among others who voted in favour of the resolution. The change in India's position on Syria appears to have been prompted by a sharp increase in violence in the Arab nation. New Delhi is hoping that the situation would not deteriorate further.
Observing that prolonged instability and unrest in Syria had implications for peace and stability in the Middle East, Puri said India was concerned with the present situation that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians and security forces personnel over the last 10 months.
''Since the beginning of the protest, we have called for a peaceful and inclusive political process to address the grievances of all sections of Syrian society,'' Puri stated.
He said India strongly condemns all violence, irrespective of whoever the perpetrators are. “We also condemn all violations of human rights. India holds the rights of expression and peaceful assembly among the fundamental values that should be respected, while ensuring stability and security of the society,” he asserted.
India has conveyed this message to the Syrian leadership, both bilaterally and along with its IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) partners.
''We have impressed upon the Syrian side to abjure violence and pay heed to the aspirations of the people of Syria,'' Puri further said.
The Indian envoy said New Delhi was firmly of the view that a political process for resolution of the present crisis should be led by the Syrians themselves.
''We believe that the main role of the international community, including the Security Council, was to facilitate engagement of the Syrian government with all sections of the Syrian society for an inclusive political process, taking into account the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians while ensuring respect for the country's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity,'' Puri stated.
He said the League of Arab States, as an important regional organisation, should play its required and historic role in promoting political dialogue among the Syrian parties.

Schwarzenegger invokes Gandhi for green movement

 Arnold Schwarzenegger in India

New Delhi - Former Hollywood action star Arnold Schwarzenegger Thursday invoked Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence movement as a perfect example to start a global green energy campaign to fight climate change.

Speaking at the 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit here, the former governor of California said that he is on a mission to spread awareness about clean and green energy.

"Most powerful movements in history, like that of (fighting) apartheid, American civil war and fight of Indian independence started at grass root level by a single person, like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther. They did not wait for higher authorities to give them go ahead to do something like this," said Schwarzenegger.

The actor, who has worked in Hollywood hits like "Terminator" and "Predators", appealed to people to work for a green movement on their own rather than wait for their governments or international community to take action.

Talking about California, he said: "The measures taken in California have brought the state in the forefront of green movement in the US. Green economy is booming with 10 times more jobs in green sector and 40 percent more energy efficiency."

He praised India for taking measures to ensure a mix of renewable and non-renewable energy in the power sector. "You (India) believe in action too and renewable accounts for 11 percent of total energy mix in the country."

"Spreading awareness about clean and green energy is my mission and I won't stop till green revolution is spread everywhere," he said.

2012 Honda CR-V sports all-new looks inside and out

The 2012 Honda CR-V has a degree of styling and refinement that just didn't exist in the three previous generations. It also rides and handles with confidence born out of recent engineering.

A 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine still powers the CR-V and its still paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. But Honda tweaked the engine to produce five more horsepower and two more pound-feet of torque, for totals of 185 and 163, respectively.
If one of your New Year's resolutions was to be more honest and you just bought Honda's new 2012 CR-V, you may be up a creek without a spark plug.
You see, you'll want to tell inquisitive friends and neighbors that the SUV you just bought is all-new. And the 2012 CR-V certainly looks like it.

It has a degree of styling and refinement that just didn't exist in the three previous generations. It also rides and handles with confidence born out of recent engineering and development.
Yet tucked away beneath the truly all-new interior and exterior is an engine and transmission that are largely carry-overs from the previous version.
But if you don't tell it's not all-new, I won't. Besides, people will be too busy commenting on the 2012 CR-V's many admirable qualities — and its price tag that starts at $23,105 — to notice your nose growing longer.
Helping to keep your conscience somewhat clear is the fact that the powertrain has at least been updated. A 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine still powers the CR-V, and it's still paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. But Honda tweaked the engine to produce five more horsepower and two more pound-feet of torque, for totals of 185 and 163, respectively.
Engineers also worked to reduce friction on both the transmission and the engine to make them more efficient. The result is an appreciable bump in fuel economy — 3 miles per gallon better on the highway.
Front-wheel-drive CR-Vs now get 23 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway, while models with the optional full-time all-wheel-drive are rated at 22 mpg and 30 mpg, respectively. During a week of mostly highway miles in an all-wheel drive model, I averaged 25.6 mpg on regular gas.
The CR-V's power is just enough for nearly any kind of daily driving you'll encounter. The engine runs smooth and quiet, and the whole experience of driving a CR-V is now a more enjoyable experience. Road and wind noise are less intrusive, and the CR-V's ride is comfortable yet nicely tuned to still transmit to the driver a tangible feel for the road.
The CR-V's only shortcoming on the road is the gearing of the automatic transmission. To maximize fuel economy, the fifth gear likes to stay put as long as possible before downshifting when cruising the freeway. This necessitates a hearty shove of the gas pedal when you want to pass someone.
Also noteworthy about this Honda's power is that it's not much for towing. Buyers looking to tow more than the CR-V's 1,500-pound limit don't have the option of choosing a larger engine, as buyers of the Ford Escape or Toyota RAV-4 do.
But this was also the case on the previous CR-V, and consumers bought that model by the bushel. It's likely Honda didn't want to mess with success; from 2007-2010, CR-Vs outsold all other SUVs on the U.S. market.
Ford's Escape finally knocked the CR-V off its throne in 2011. Ford was able to do this in part because the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan threw Honda a production curveball from which the company is only now recovering. This hurt sales of many of its vehicles, including the previous CR-V.
Cost probably was another factor for the powertrain carry-over. Without a heavy price tag for research and development on a new engine and transmission to pass to consumers, Honda can throw more content into the CR-V and increase the base price only $400.
The result is the two-wheel-drive LX model that comes standard with tech goodies like a backup camera, Bluetooth, keyless entry, a 160-watt stereo, a feature that reads your text messages to you and a full-color screen at the top of the dashboard for the trip computer and stereo display.
On the EX-L model with navigation, that color screen also displays turn-by-turn directions in concert with the nav system's own screen below it.
The rest of the CR-V's interior is straightforward and adorned only by necessity. Although the dashboard materials are hard plastic, they're textured to belie their economy. The entire cabin's design and layout are more modern and sophisticated than the third-generation CR-V. Interior space is about the same.
Seating in the CR-V is a comfortable affair, if you're up front. But the rear seats and their church-pew flat seat backs left a little to be desired over long rides. At least space isn't an issue; 6-foot-plus passengers are easily able to ride in the back with plenty of legroom and headroom. Plus, the floor is flat so the middle passenger can enjoy a trip without chewing on their kneecaps.
