American NGOs fund nuclear protests: Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI: American NGOs fund the protests that hold India back from building the nuclear reactors it needs to meet fast-growing energy needs, Prime Minister Manmohan Singhsaid in an interview published in Science magazine on Friday.

Among the plants suffering delays is the Kudankulam power station in Tamil Nadu, which was due to open last year. Progress on the Russian-built reactor has been halted by protesters over safety fears.

"The atomic energy programme has got into problems because these NGOs, mostly I think based in the United States, don't appreciate the need for our country to increase the energy supply," Singh said in the interview.

The PM also blamed protests against genetically modified crops on groups he said were funded from the United States and Scandinavian countries.

"(They are) not fully appreciative of the development challenges that our country faces," he said.

Media commentaries said his remarks were reminiscent of an era when India was more inward looking and saw foreign influence behind many of the country's problems.

Protesters at Kudankulam have denied that they get overseas financing, and say an interior ministry investigation into the accounts of dozens of protest groups in the area turned up no evidence of wrongdoing.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in India are allowed to receive foreign financing, with certain restrictions. A member of Singh's cabinet on Friday said three NGOs had lost their license to operate for inappropriately using funds.

The Kudankulam power station is one of several planned power projects that are seen as vital to plugging huge electricity shortages that have damaged economic growth.

Protests by local people against the power station gathered pace after the Fukushima accident in Japan in March last year. In December, Singh said the plant would be open within weeks.

For namesake's visa, Harbhajan gets a googly

JALANDHAR: Cricketer Harbhajan Singh may have tormented many batsmen with his bowling but this is one googly he may fail to comprehend himself.
Police in Jalandhar are investigating a scam in which a namesake of the Indian cricketer used his bank statement to get a visa to visit Britain.
The New Delhi-based British high commission has refused a visa to Harbhajan Singh of Patti in the border district of Tarn Taran after his bank statement was found to be fake.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Harkanwaljit Singh Khakh said police were probing how the namesake Harbhajan Singh was able to procure the bank statement of the cricketer from the Civil Lines branch of HDFC Bank.
The high commission became suspicious about the documents submitted by the namesake, as his mother's name was mentioned as Kulwant Kaur while the bank statement showed the name as Avtar Kaur.
The high commission complained to the Jalandhar police commissioner. "We have sent summons twice to the other Harbhajan Singh Singh, who works in a oil company in Mumbai, but he has not joined the investigation," Khakh said here.
Police are also investigating the role of agents and HDFC bank employees to unearth if there was a racket of supplying fake bank account statements.
The fake statement submitted to the embassy showed an account balance of over Rs 4,00,000, in the name of the cricketer who resides in Jalandhar city, 150 km from Chandigarh. Police said the manager of the HDFC Bank had confirmed that the account statement sent to the embassy belonged to the cricketer.
Police have questioned members of the family of the Tarn Taran Harbhajan Singh.
Cricketers Harbhajan, fondly called 'Bhajji', is now out of the Indian cricket team owing to poor form.
The ace spinner had his bag, containing his passport and other documents, stolen from his SUV near Haryana's Karnal town in December when he was on his way to Delhi and had stopped for coffee.

Ministers behind Delhi Police crackdown on Ramdev: Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

NEW DELHI: A day after the Supreme Courtslammed the Delhi Police for its handling of Baba Ramdev's Ramlila ground protest in June last year, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Friday squarely put the blame for the midnight crackdown on the UPA government and its ministers.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on Indiandiaspora human rights issues, Ravi Shankar said the Delhi Police were only following the orders of the political masters and called for "more work" to be done so such swoop downs are not repeated.

"The Supreme Court has come very heavily on the government. It is not just the police, but people behind the police who have to be taken care of," he said at the event organised by Human Rights Defense (India), a civil rights body.

"Police were only doing their duty and it was somebody else, who gave the instructions. So the buck does not stop there, as it was not the police alone who did this violence. It was a bad day for Indian democracy," he said.

"More work needs to be done so that such incidents are not repeated," he added.

Lawyer of tortured Indian maid in US to target diplomat's assets

NEW YORK: A day after a US judge recommended nearly USD 1.5 million to an Indian maid for the "barbaric treatment" by an Indian diplomat and her husband, the woman's lawyer today said he plans to go after the couple's assets as he asked New Delhi to take appropriate action in the case.

US judge Frank Maas has recommended thatShanti Gurung be awarded USD 1.5 million in compensation by Neena Malhotra, an Indian diplomat who had worked at the Indian Consulate General in Manhattan, and her husband Jogesh Malhotra.

Gurung has alleged that the Malhotras treated her unfairly, giving her a meagre salary for long hours of work.

"The Indian government has consistently ignored this matter and refused to take responsibility for it, which we think is very irresponsible of them and we are hoping that they will now behave appropriately," Mitchell Karlan, the lawyer for maid Shanti Gurung, told reporters here.

In New Delhi, sources said that it was "premature" to comment on the issue as the compensation is recommendatory in nature.

"It is premature for us to react. It is only a recommendation to the judge. We will have to wait till the process is over," sources said.

Karlan said it is "regrettable" that the Malhotras have "refused" for over a year to participate in the case and defend themselves.

"Now we have a judgement and we intend to execute on their assets. We intend to begin the process of tracking down Malhotras assets," to ensure compensation is paid to Gurung, he said.

The Malhotras had brought Gurung, who is in her early twenties, to work as their domestic help in New York in 2006.

NRI Assult Case

Saif Ali Khan's counter complaint does not stand: Police sources

Mumbai:  Actor Saif Ali Khan’s counter complaint against Iqbal Sharma, the man who claims that the actor assaulted him and fractured his nose at a restaurant in Mumbai late on Tuesday night, does not stand, police sources have told Informatives.
In his complaint last night, Saif alleged that Mr Sharma`s father-in-law punched him first and that the duo abused the women who were accompanying him at the restaurant. The actor alleged that his eye was swollen after he was punched.  After studying the application, police sources say the actor`s injuries cannot be ascertained as he has not backed it up with a medical certificate. The police, sources add, have examined 15 people so far, which includes Mr Sharma‘s father-in-law and the waiters at the restaurant.
Yesterday, at around 7:50 pm, Saif was arrested by the police at his lawyer’s office based on the complaint filed by Mr Sharma. Girlfriend and co-star Kareena Kapoor accompanied him. Around 90 minutes later, he left the Colaba police station after having paid Rs. 15,000 and being granted bail.
Mr Sharma, a businessman from South Africa, says he was seated at the table next to Saif and his group at Wasabi, the uber-fancy restaurant at the Taj hotel in Colaba. The actor had other Bollywood friends with him –Kareena Kapoor, Kareena’s sister Karisma Kapoor, actor Amrita Arora and her husband, Shakeel Ladak, andBilal Amrohi, a producer.
In his version of events, Mr Sharma says he sent a note to Saif`s table, asking his group to talk a little softer. “They were making a lot of noise. And we asked the management to ask them to be quiet so that we could also enjoy our evening. This failed on about three occasions at least. Mr Sharma says his family and he decided to leave the restaurant..

Saif Ali Khan was the first to hit Iqbal: Eyewitness

Saif Ali Khan's NRI assault case gets a new and fresh angle, from where things looks clearer. According to reports of a leading news channel, one of the eyewitnesses of the incident revealed that it was actually Saif Ali Khan who provoked Iqbal Sharma. In fact, Saif was the one who punched Sharma first.

But the actor has a different story to say. Saif told that he was hit first and hence reacted in self defence. "I was hit first and verbally abused," Saif said, talking to reporters at his home. "I was hit first. And as shocking as it may seem, the elderly gentlemen hit me. I'm not sure what provoked him.” "I am looking forward to CCTV footage (inside the restaurant)," he said.

On Tuesday night, Saif and his friends who were dining in a restaurant at Taj, got into a brawl with an NRI who reportedly asked the actor to maintain silence. The Mumbai Police has recorded the statements of 15 people over this assault case.

Saif was provoked: Kareena Kapoor

I haven't spoken about what happened that night, but now I feel I should because whatever is being said is completely one-sided. This man (Iqbal Sharma) is publicity-hungry. How can a man with a broken nose and jaw speak continuously on TV for more than 10 hours?
Saif was provoked. He's a thorough gentleman and would never get into a brawl, especially with women around.
We were having dinner at Wasabi (a restaurant in Mumbai) when Iqbal stormed into our corner and started screaming at us. The only people present at that time were Sharma's group and ours. We were laughing and talking, but certainly not screaming! There was no reason for this man to come to our table and shout at Saif. Even so, Saif said sorry but he continued to rant.
Now he's saying he didn't know that there were actors present at the table. But his wife Tarina (who has acted in "Dhol" and "Bhool Bhulaiyya") and Malaika had greeted each other just a little while before! The funny thing is when Tarina saw her husband making a scene, instead of stopping him she got into the lift and ran away!
The fight happened when Iqbal was returning from the washroom and Saif was going down. Iqbal pushed Saif and the old man joined in. When Shakeel (Ladak) and Bilal (Amrohi) saw this, they came to his rescue. Saif is very respectful towards seniors and he knows how to behave in public places. I am not saying this because I am in a relationship with him. It's a fact.
Saif was also hit and has a swollen eye. He has given a statement and each one of us stand by it. We were witness to what happened and this is a sure case of Saif being targeted because of his celebrity status. It's disgusting!
An insider account...
You've heard Saif Ali Khan's version and you've heard Iqbal Sharma's version. DT has an insider's account of what really happened. As for the CCTV footage that everyone is waiting for - it is simply not there.
Saif Ali KhanKareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapur, Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Arora Ladak and another guy (Amrita's husband Shakeel) arrived at Wasabi for dinner post drinks at Harbour Bar. Iqbal and his guests were already there and had more or less finished dinner. Saif and gang were very noisy, so Iqbal complained to the Maitre d'. The manager closed the curtains of the private dining room, but the noise was still too loud. After some time, Saif went to the washroom. When he returned, Iqbal abused him. That's when Saif and he got into a scuffle, leading to the actor breaking Iqbal's nose and ripping his kurta.
While the restaurant staff gave Iqbal a Wasabi shirt to wear, an old couple who was with Iqbal reprimanded Saif for his behaviour. The senior lady actually went up to Saif to give him a piece of her mind, so Saif said he was sorry. She said, "Tell them, not me." Saif said, "Forget it" and walked out. When the other guy in Saif's party was walking out, he passed the old lady's husband who muttered, "Terrible!" or something like that. The man turned around and slapped the old man, who fell down.
Post that, everyone left, so Iqbal asked the hotel's security what to do. They told him he could file a report, but it was better to let things be. Following this, Iqbal went to the hospital and discovered that his nose had been broken, so he filed a police report. All this happened around midnight. The police came to the hotel at 3am and asked the restaurant staff for details of what happened. Everything, except what happened at Wasabi, is on CCTV, as the hotel likes to keep dining areas free of cameras."
Salman Khan supports Saif, says media was biased
Salman Khan, who is back here after the shooting of " Ek Tha Tiger" in Cuba, came out in support of his fellow actor Saif Ali Khan, saying that media should have waited for his version and dug out the facts before running what was carried on television.
"Even the press was all for the other guy. They didn't even bother to ask what happened to Saif. Did Saif got wacked first or not? We should have waited for Saif to come out and say what he had to say," Salman told reporters after he was aksed to comment on the incident.
"We are actors and we have been in the industry for the longest time. Saif has been in the industry for 18 years. We knew the guy," added the actor.
Saif was involved in a scuffle early at Wasabi, the Japanese restaurant at Taj Mahal Palace with South Africa-based Indian businessman Iqbal Sharma. The latter alleged that Saif abused and assaulted him and his father-in-law and filed a complained at the Colaba police station, the actor said he was provoked to do so.
Following Sharma's complain the 41-year-old actor was arrested with two others -- Shakeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi.
Police detained the trio at the Marine Drive police station and later brought them to the Colaba police station. The interrogation of the trio lasted an hour. Later, the actor and his two friends were freed on personal bonds of Rs.3,000 each.
According to Sharma, Saif called him an "idiot" for complaining about the actor's loud conduct at the restaurant. He said he and his family had requested the restaurant manager to ask Saif and his friends, which included Kareena, Amrita Arora and Malaika Arora Khan, to keep their voices down.
Salman said: "If you have gone into a restaurant, you are not there to manao matam (mourn). You are there to have dinner and drinks. My family was there, everybody was there. I am sure he (Sharma) might be right, but my point is that find out the entire thing and then come on TV."
The actor, who himself has been involved in hit and run case, and scuffles, says the blame always comes on actors.

Bollywood celebs support Saif Ali Khan over his hotel brawl

Several Bollywood celebrities have extended their support to actor Saif Ali Khan, who was recently arrested for assaulting an NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma and later released on bail. On Twitter, stars like Amrita Arora, Farah Ali Khan, Kunal Kohli, Shobhaa De and a few others sympathised with the actor.

Amrita Arora, who was present at the location of the tiff, said, “It’s sad that celebs become victims of other people wanting their 15 minutes of fame. Just for the record, if the people concerned were assaulted so badly, how come they were fit enough to be on TV giving interviews all day?”

On Twitter, jewellery designer Farah Ali Khan also defended Saif Ali Khan. Farah quipped, “There is something amiss in this incident and I’m sure the facts will come out soon. It’s very unlike Saif to hit an elderly man or provoke a fight.”

Filmmaker Kunal Kohli, who has earlier worked with Saif Ali Khan in Hum Tum, tweeted, “Saif explained the whole incident on TV just now. It’s unfair to tilt opinions against anyone just because he’s a star.” He added, “Without knowing Saif’s side of what happened how can anyone just believe what this guys saying is true.”

Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani tweeted, “Let me put it this way. IF Saif was provoked or hit first, I think he did what many of us would do. By ‘us’, I mean myself and you guys.” He added, “Unlikely that Saif hit that guy without extreme provocation. At times hecklers get so obnoxious/personal/ aggressive, that one has to react.”

Director Anubhav Sinha wrote, “TV Celebrating Saif’s Pdmashree tonight more than ever before. Makes for good sensation. Anyone interested in what actually happened?” He added, “Have personally seen stars take a lot of shit because they MUST behave responsibly. I am sure this coin has two sides too. I mustn’t take sides if I don’t know the whole story. NOR SHOULD YOU.”

Meanwhile, writer Shobhaa De cracked a joke about the South African NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma’s broken nose. “Some guys refuse to play it ‘saif’! What to do? Agent Iqbal may help Agent Vinod break records, not noses.”

Saif Ali Khan gets support from Munni Badnaam in assault case

Actor Saif Ali Khan, who has currently become the talk of the nation for his recent brawl with an NRI at a restaurant, finally gets to hear a supportive voice. Saif, who has been defending himself at length, has got someone to raise support for him and slam Iqbal Sharma.

Bollywood actress cum item girl Malaika Arora Khan has finally broke the silence as she was present when the fight took place at that night. A leading daily reports that Malaika felt glad that Saif had come out with his statement. Malaika also admitted that there were chairs thrown and abuses hurled on that night.

Reportedly, the other people who were there during the incident took place, were Saif's girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, her sister Karisma, Amrita Arora and her husband Shakeel Ladakh as well as Malaika.

Though few reports say that it was actually Shakeel who came to blows initially, but Saif on the other side said that he was provoked by Iqbal after he abused the ladies.

'Aakash 2 tablet to be launched in April/May'

New Delhi: The upgraded version of Aakash tablet -- touted to be the world's cheapest -- would be launched in April or May without hike in price, said Dr D Purendeswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, here today.

She was talking to PTI after attending National HRD Conclave organised by Federation of Gujarat Industries here.

The new tablet was completely indigenous, and defects noticed in the earlier version had been rectified, she said.

Kapil Sibal, Union HRD Minister, had said a few days ago that there were some "problems" with the original manufacturer Datawind, and the company would not be associated with the tablet anymore.

Aakash tablet is priced at approximately $49 (Rs 2400-2500).

Apple has more money than it needs: CEO Tim Cook

Apple Headquarters

CALIFORNIA: Apple CEO Tim Cook says he believes the world's most valuable company has more money than it needs. His next challenge is to figure out whether Apple should break from the cash-hoarding ways of his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, and dip into its $98 billion bank account to pay shareholders a dividend this year.

During a question-and-answer session Thursday at the company's annual shareholders' meeting, Cook indicated he and the rest of Apple's board are nearing a decision.

The board and management are "thinking about this very deeply," Cook said. "This isn't a case where 100 per cent of people are going to agree with what we do."

The question of how to handle Apple's cash stockpile is a touchy one, partly because company co-founder Jobs had steadfastly brushed aside suggestions that the company restore its quarterly dividend. Apple stopped making the shareholder payments in 1995 when it was in such deep trouble that it needed to hold on to every cent.

Things got so bad that Apple turned to rival Microsoft Corp. in 1997 for a $150 million infusion to stay afloat. Microsoft came to the rescue at the same time Apple named Jobs as its CEO - a decision that turned out to be one of the smartest business moves ever made.

Haunted by memories of Apple's grim times, Jobs kept accumulating cash even as the company's fortunes soared during the final decade of his life.

Cook, though, appears willing to return some of the cash to shareholders since he succeeded Jobs as Apple's CEO last August. Jobs died Oct. 5 after a long battle with cancer.

During Thursday's meeting, Cook dropped his strongest hint yet that Apple will part with some of the money. "Frankly speaking," Cook said, "it's more than we need to run the company."

One Apple shareholder, Asif Khan of Sugar Land, Texas, urged Cook to resist committing to a dividend every three months. He said he thinks it makes more sense for Apple to pay a one-time dividend later this year before the expiration of a provision that limits the federal tax rate on dividends to 15 percent.

If Apple opts for a regular quarterly dividend, Khan is worried it might be misinterpreted by some investors as a sign that Apple is losing confidence in its ability to keep propelling its stock price higher as the company churns out hit products such as the iPhone and iPad.

During the past year, Apple's stock has surged 50 percent to create about $160 billion in shareholder wealth. Apple now has a market value of $480 billion - more than the combined value of Microsoft and prominent rival Google Inc.

Apple shares gained $3.35 Thursday to close at $516.39. The high price sparked a question Thursday about whether Apple plans to split its stock to make it more affordable to buy. Cook indicated it's unlikely to occur, saying the board has studied the history of other companies that regularly split their stock and concluded "it does nothing" for long-term returns. Apple last split its stock seven years ago. The shares have increased 11-fold since then.

Although most of those gains occurred under Jobs' leadership, Apple's stock and financial results have remained stellar under Cook, Job's hand-picked successor. Cook has worked as a top Apple executive since 1998.

Given how well Apple has been doing, shareholders had little reason to complain at Thursday's hour-long meeting.

While shareholders waited in a 40-minute line to get inside the meeting at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, a few protesters carried signs urging the company to ensure that workers building its products in Taiwanese and Chinese factories are paid more and treated humanely. "Stop iSweatshop," one sign implored. Another stated: `iWant an ethical phone." No questions about the conditions in Apple's overseas factories were posed during the meeting.

In other matters, Apple agreed to adopt a proposal from the public pension fund Calpers that will require all of the company's directors to receive a majority of shareholder votes to remain on the board. The proposal was backed by more than 80 percent of the shareholder votes counted in the preliminary results announced by Apple Thursday.

All eight of Apple's current directors were re-elected with at least 81 percent of the shareholder votes in the preliminary results, so the switch to majority-voting rules wouldn't have changed this year's outcome if the new rules had already been in effect.

Remembering a legend: The book of Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs smelled so foul that none of his co-workers at Atari in the seventies would work with him. Entreating him to shower was usually futile; he'd inevitably claim that his strict vegan diet had rid him of body odor, thus absolving him of the need for standard hygiene habits. Later, friends would theorize that he had been exercising what would prove a limitless capacity for sustained and gratuitous lying that came to be nicknamed the "reality distortion field."

Jobs originally learned the "reality distortion field" from Bob Friedland, an enterprising hippie he met by chance one day when he returned early to his dorm room and found Friedland having sex with Jobs' girlfriend. Bob was four years older than Steve, and had taken two years off to serve a prison sentence for LSD trafficking. Like Steve, Bob would eventually become a billionaire, just in the mining business. His followers would often invoke his old drug dealer nickname "Toxic Bob."

Steve Jobs needed no nickname. As the title of his definitive biography reminds, Steve Jobs speaks for itself. His name was his essence, what set him apart even among greats like Einstein and Kissinger, iconic figures with whom he shared a biographer, Walter Isaacson (though not the cheesy, descriptive subheads Isaacson used in his books about the other two subjects).
Steve Jobs, the book, is very much a product of its time, which is to say, a product of its subject's fastidious narcissism and the broader culture's limitless capacity for nurturing it. With any luck future generations will saddle Steve Jobs, the brand, with the blemish of all the jobs (small "j") a once-great nation relinquished because of brand-name billionaires like Jobs. But we are not there yet.

Arriving in stores all of a fortnight after his death, the book was instantly deemed by the New York Times as "clear, elegant and concise enough to qualify as an iBio."

In truth Steve Jobs is the antithesis of concise, but words have a way of inverting meanings in the reality distortion field. Surely Isaacson might have dropped one of 92 references (according to Kindle) to Bob Dylan.

Sometimes the repetition serves a purpose: The drug LSD, referred to 33 times, is clearly important to Jobs. (The FBI thought the same, according to documents released this month.) "How many of you have taken LSD?" Jobs taunts an audience of Stanford business school students. "Are you a virgin? How many times have you taken LSD?" he demands of an Apple interviewee. Bill Gates would "be a broader guy if he had dropped acid." Tripping was "one of the two or three most important things he'd done in his life." People who had never dropped acid "would never fully understand him." The generations that followed his own were more "materialistic" and less "idealistic" for not having tripped; also, they all looked like "virgins." In the binary world within Steve's reality, having consumed LSD was the key determinant of whether a colleague or employee was deemed "enlightened" or "an asshole."

To iSummarize: Steve Jobs had a litmus test for evaluating workers: It was a lot like a literal litmus test.

Steve never learned to program computers, but he was far too skilled at manipulating people. He wooed all manner of women who were too good for him - such as Joan Baez, who was good enough for Bob Dylan to neglect in the sixties-only to discard them so thoughtlessly it seems like a joke. According to Baez, he experienced a "fervor of delight" while demonstrating a computer programmed to play a Brahms quartet and explaining that future generations of computer orchestras would sound better than humans, down to the innuendo and cadences. This filled Baez with "rage," she recalled later on with evident amusement; it reinforced Jobs' growing suspicion that she was "antiquated." Later, Baez brought him to a dinner party at which he met a 20-year-old who became his new girlfriend.

France dash Canada's London dreams

NEW DELHI: Canada's dreams of playing in the London Olympics came to a screeching halt when France held them to a 1-1 draw in their must-win last round-robin match of the men's hockey Olympic qualifiers on Friday.

Needing an outright win to stay in the hunt for a place in Sunday's final, the 14th ranked Canadians failed to hold on to their 1-0 half-time lead as lower-ranked France dashed their hopes by equalising after the change of ends.

A win on Friday could have assured Canada a place in final as they have better goal difference than France and Poland.

With the draw, France find themselves in a good position to qualify for the final and would be hoping that hosts India beat Poland in the final match of the day today.

Fully aware of the task at hand, Canada started on a bright note when striker Mark Pearson (six goals so far in the competition) had a golden opportunity to put his side ahead but his powerful shot went wide.

It was an intense affair in the first half as both the teams pressed hard for goals and neither giving an inch to the other in the defence.

Canada finally broke the deadlock in the final minute of the opening period through a field goal from Iam Smythe.

The French team, whose three players - Martin, Tom and Hugo Genestet - played in the match on the back of a personal tragedy after receiving the news of their father Christophe's demise yesterday, were in no mood to give up without a fight and took some risks to make a comeback into the game.

But the equaliser eluded them till the 56th minute. The 18th ranked France spoiled Canada's party when Fabien Magner drew parity through a field goal.

Stunned by the goal, Canada went all-out attacking in the final minutes of the game but failed to score the winner.

Meanwhile, in an inconsequential match between minnows of the men's competition, Italy defeated Singapore 4-0.

Agustin Nunez (35th, 52nd) scored twice after Ignacio Salas (18th) gave them the lead. Mattia Melato converted a penalty corner just a minute before hooter.

India beat Poland to set up summit clash with France in men's hockey Olympic qualifiers

NEW DELHI: Already assured of a place in the summit clash, favourites India had to sweat it out to keep their unbeaten run in the tournament defeating Poland 4-2 in the final round-robin match of the men's hockeyOlympic qualifiers on Friday.

Schedule and Results Points Table

With this victory, India not only maintained a clean slate in the tournament, but also dashed Poland's London dreams as the European side needed atleast a draw or a win to secure their place in Sunday's final.

Poland's defeat means 18th ranked France will be India's opponent in the title clash after the later held Canada to a 1-1 draw in an earlier game.

Contrary to the final scoreline, the Indians were made to toil hard for the victory by the Polish team.

Even though India had the lions' share of possession in the match, they were far from impressive as they wasted numerous scoring chances, courtesy some poor finishing from the forwards.

The home team also cut a sorry figure during penalty corners as they converted just three out of the nine they earned in the match. On the other hand, Poland utilized two out of their three penalty corners.

Credit must also go to Polish custodian Mariusz Chyla, who was brilliant and denied the Indians on numerous occasions.

Sandeep Singh (26th and 70th minutes) once again starred for India, converting two penalty corners to take his personal goal tally in the tournament to 11.

Apart from Sandeep, experienced striker Shivendra Singh (59th) and VR Raghunath (65th) scored the other goals for India. For Poland Tomasz Dutkiewcz (13th) and Miroslaw Juszczak(63rd) sounded the board.

The 10th ranked Indians started on an aggressive note and mounted continuous raids into the Polish citadel from the word go.

The Indians got their first scoring chance in the ninth minute but the Polish custodian Chyla came up with a double save to deny the hosts.

Chyla first blocked Shivendra's shot from close range after the Indian striker was set up by a one-two from Tushar and Danish, and then the Polish goalkeeper brilliantly saved Sarvanjit's reverse shot from the subsequent rebound.

But it was Poland who stunned the moderate crowd present at the floodlit Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here, taking the lead in the 14th minute from their very first attack.

Poland scored against the run of the mill when Dutkiewicz converted their only penalty corner of the opening period with a beautiful dummy.

Jolted by the early goal, India pressed hard for the equalizer and in the process earned two penalty corners in quick succession, but failed to convert a single one as the Polish goalkeeper came up some stunning saves.

The Indian then earned two more penalty corners in a span of two minutes and from the fourth one Sandeep scored to go into the breather locked at 1-1.

The script was the same after the resumption of play as India continued to dominate the proceedings with consistent raids, but goals eluded them as their strikers lacked finishing.

In the 52nd minute, India earned two penalty corners in succession but on both occasion Shivendra failed to stop the ball.

Shivendra, however, made up for his mistake by giving India a 2-1 lead seven minutes later, deflecting home Sarvanjit Singh's cross. Poland equalised soon when Juszczak converted a penalty corner.

But it was not to be Poland's day as India converted two penalty corners in the last five minutes of the match through Raghunath and Sandeep to finish on top of the pool with 15 points.

BlackBerry launches new PlayBook OS

Friday, February 24, 2012, 18:37
New Delhi: Research In Motion (RIM), makers of BlackBerry smartphones, on Friday launched a new operating system (OS) for its PlayBook tablets with additional functionalities, including the ability to run Android-based applications.

The BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 will add advanced messaging features, increased social integration and better browser, among other things, Research In Motion (RIM) Manager, Carrier Product (India), Ranjan Moses told reporters here.

The new OS also supports Android applications like Pool Break Pro.

This will enable developers create applications for Android and make the same applications available to PlayBook users as well.

The new OS is available as a free update for existing users and the new devices will have the new OS in-built.

BlackBerry Playbook is available at an offer price of Rs 19,990 for the 64 GB model.

In December last year, the Canadian giant had slashed the price of its PlayBook by more than half to Rs 13,490 for the 16 GB version to cash in on the festive season and burgeoning demand for tablet PCs in India.

RIM, which is known for its BlackBerry series of phones, had introduced PlayBook in June in the Indian market.

According to analysts, sales in the tablet PC segment in India are expected to touch one million units over the next 12 months.

With 3G (high-speed internet services) being rolled out aggressively, the opportunity has only expanded, they said.

Since the launch of Apple's iPad in the country, the tablet market has been witnessing huge competition, with more and more new contenders launching their devices.
