Suspected Islamic extremists kill at least 44 students in attack on Nigerian college

POTISKUM, Nigeria - Suspected Islamic extremists attacked an agricultural college in the dead of night, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in dormitories and torching classrooms, the school's provost said — the latest violence in northeastern Nigeria's ongoing Islamic uprising.
The attack, blamed on the Boko Haram extremist group, came despite a 4 1/2-month-old state of emergency covering three states and one-sixth of the country. It and other recent violence have led many to doubt assurances from the government and the military that they are winning Nigeria's war on the extremists.
Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture told The Associated Press that there were no security forces protecting the college. Two weeks ago, the state commissioner for education had begged schools and colleges to reopen and promised they would be guarded by soldiers and police.
Idi Mato said as many as 50 students may have been killed in the assault that began at about 1 a.m. Sunday in rural Gujba. "They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels. They opened fire at them," he said, adding that most victims were aged between 18 and 22.
Soldiers recovered 42 bodies and transported 18 wounded students to Damaturu Specialist Hospital, 40 kilometres (25) miles north, said a military intelligence official who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
Two of the wounded later died, said Adamu Usman, a survivor from Gujba who was helping at the hospital.
President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the attack in a televised "chat with the media" Sunday night, and questioned the motives of Boko Haram, which wants to impose Islamic law across Nigeria. He said he wondered whether the victims were Muslim or Christian.
Usman said almost all those killed were Muslims, as is the majority of the college's student body.
Jonathan likened the assault to that on Nairobi's premier shopping mall last week, where Islamic extremists from Somalia's al-Shabab movement killed 67 civilians — but only after allowing many Muslims to leave. Boko Haram has said some of its fighters trained with al-Shabab in Somalia.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has said in video addresses that his group wants to end democracy in Nigeria and allow education only in Islamic schools. Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden."
Its uprising poses the biggest security challenge in years to this country. Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and its most populous nation with more than 160 million people — almost equal numbers of which are Muslims and Christians.
Boko Haram militants have killed more than 1,700 people since 2010.
"Sometimes you need courage" to confront such challenges, Jonathan said, accusing the extremists of choosing soft targets to embarrass his government.
Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe state, where the killings occurred, indicated that the military crackdown is ineffective.
"Although there is (an) increase in troop movement and military hardware deployment in the northeast, people are yet to see the kind of action on the ground that effectively nips criminal and terrorist activities in the bud," he said in a statement.
The extremists rode into the college in two double-cabin pickup all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles, some dressed in Nigerian military uniforms, a surviving student, Ibrahim Mohammed, told the AP. He said they appeared to know the layout of the college, attacking the four male hostels but avoiding the one hostel reserved for women.
"We ran into the bush, nobody is left in the school now," Mohammed said.
Wailing relatives gathered outside the hospital morgue, where workers laid out bloody bodies in an orderly row on the lawn for family members to identify loved ones.
One body had its fists clenched to the chest in a protective gesture. Another had hands clasped under the chin, as if in prayer. A third had arms raised in surrender.
Provost Idi Mato confirmed the school's other 1,000 enrolled students have fled the college.
Most schools in the area closed after militants on July 6 killed 29 pupils and a teacher, burning some alive in their hostels, at Mamudo outside Damaturu.
U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday described Boko Haram as one of the most vicious terrorist organizations in the world, speaking at a meeting with Jonathan at which both reaffirmed their commitment to fight terrorism.
The Islamic extremists have killed at least 30 other civilians in the past week, including a pastor and his son. And the military said it killed more than 100 militants and lost 16 soldiers in an attack on an extremist stronghold Sept. 21-22.
Human rights groups have accused Nigeria's military of summary killings of civilians in reprisal attacks and no one knows the fate of hundreds of people detained as suspected militants.
Meanwhile, farmers and government officials are fleeing threats of imminent attacks from Boko Haram in the area of the Gwoza Hills, a mountainous region with caves that shelter the militants despite repeated aerial bombardments by the military.
A local government official said there had been a series of attacks in recent weeks. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared for his life, said Gwoza town was deserted when he visited it briefly under heavy security escort on Thursday.
He said militants had chased medical officers from the government hospital in Gwoza, which had been treating some victims of attacks, and torched three public schools.
More than 30,000 people have fled to neighbouring Cameroon and Chad and the uprising combined with the military emergency has forced farmers from their fields and vendors from the markets.
The attacks come as Nigeria prepares to celebrate 53 years of independence from Britain on Tuesday and amid political jockeying in the run up to presidential elections next year. Many northern Muslim politicians say they do not want another term for Jonathan, who is from the predominantly Christian south.

Tata, Singapore Airlines to form new airline in India

New Delhi: Salt to software conglomerate Tata group on Thursday said it has entered into an agreement with Singapore Airlines to start a full-service carrier in India.

The two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the airline, which will be based in New Delhi and operate under the full-service model, Tata Sons said in a statement.

"Tata Sons will own 51 per cent and Singapore Airlines will own 49 per cent," the statement added. The Tatas already have a partnership with AirAsia Bhd to start a low-cost airline in India.

Tata Sons has applied to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for approval to establish the new airline in India, the company said, adding the initial board will have two members nominated by Tata Sons and one nominated by Singapore Airlines.

The Chairman will be Prasad Menon, nominated by Tata Sons.

"It is Tata Sons' evaluation that civil aviation in India offers sustainable growth potential. We now have the opportunity to launch a world-class, full-service airline in India. We are delighted that we are partnering in this endeavour with the world renowned Singapore Airlines," Menon said.

Expressing similar views, Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said: "We have always been a strong believer in the growth potential of India's aviation sector and are excited about the opportunity to partner Tata Sons in contributing to the future expansion of the market." With the recent liberalisation, the time is right to jointly bring consumers a fresh new option for full-service air travel, he added.

"We are confident the joint venture airline will help to stimulate market demand and provide economic benefits to India," Goh said.

Details of the airline's branding, management team and products and services will be announced in due course, the company said.

Manmohan, Sonia's visit to Muzaffarnagar secular tourism: BJP

"One month after the communal violence took place in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav visited the area on Saturday. Today the Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul have gone there for secular tourism," BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters.
He said both the SP government in Uttar Pradesh and the Congress-led government at the Centre have not taken any action to control the situation in the state.
"They are taking a secular ride on the communal riots which took place under the nose of the central government and in front of the eyes of the UP government. These riots- sponsored by the UP government- have continued to play out and these forces have fanned them by giving protection to the rioters," he said.
BJP alleged that both Congress and SP are hand in glove on
the issue and are engaged only in a mock battle.
"Had such a riot taken place in a BJP-ruled state Congress would have created an uproar... A court should be investigating the matter. There is so much fear among the people and such a large number have had to flee," Naqvi said.
BJP has often complained that there is much hue and cry about the 2002 riots in Gujarat while communal riots in states ruled by other parties are ignored.
"These riots in Muzaffarnagar have crossed all limits of humanity. People do not want to hear the Prime Minister. They want the government to act," Naqvi said.
Naqvi said when the Centre asked the Uttar Pradesh government to send a report on the riots in Muzaffarnagar it did not and instead posed questions.
The party sought to know why Sonia and Rahul were allowed to go to Muzaffarnagar when BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad and others were prevented.
"Even a central minister (Ajit Singh) was not permitted to go there. They were told if they visit the place the situation will worsen. But the Prime Minister, the Super Prime Minister and Yuvraj went there only to rub salt on the wounds of the victims," Naqvi said.
The main Opposition alleged that riots have taken place in Uttar Pradesh during Congress rule in the past - be it in Meerut, Varanasi, Allahabad, Aligarh and Azamgarh.

Malkangiri, September 14
At least 13 Maoists, including a woman, are believed to be behind the May 25 attack on a Congress convoy at Darba Ghat in Chhattisgarh, were killed in an encounter with security forces in a forest area of Malkangiri district early today. One rebel was captured after the encounter.

The group had been camping in the forest. A joint team of special operations group (SOG) and district voluntary force (DVF) raided a camp site in Silakuta forest in Padia area bordering Chhattisgarh after a tip-off, said DIG Devdutt Singh.
The Maoists opened fire leading to a gun battle, killing 13 members. “The bodies of 13 Maoists were recovered while another rebel was captured by the security personnel after the encounter,” said Malkangiri SP Akhilesh Singh as the police intensified combing operation in the area.

World's oldest man passes away

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. - The world's oldest man, a 112-year-old self-taught musician, coal miner and gin rummy aficionado from western New York, has died. He was 112.
Salustiano Sanchez-Blazquez died Friday at a nursing home in Grand Island, according to Robert Young, senior gerontology consultant with Guinness World Records.
Sanchez-Blazquez became the world's oldest man when Jiroemon Kimura died June 12 at age 116.
Born June 8, 1901, in the village of El Tejado de Bejar, Spain, he was known for his talent on the dulzaina, a double-reed wind instrument that he taught himself and played at weddings and village celebrations. At 17, he moved with his older brother Pedro and a group of friends to Cuba, where they worked in the cane fields.
In 1920, he came to the United States through Ellis Island and worked in the coal mines of Lynch, Kentucky. Ultimately, he moved to the Niagara Falls area of New York, where he worked in construction and in the industrial furnaces. He married his wife, Pearl, in 1934.
A spokeswoman for Sanchez-Blazquez's family did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.
In a statement provided by Guinness World Records earlier this summer, Sanchez-Blazquez — whose nickname was "Shorty" — said he was humbled by the attention, saying he didn't feel he accomplished anything special just because he has lived longer than most.
"He says, 'I'm an old man and let's leave it at that,'" his daughter, 69-year-old Irene Johnson, said at the time. Sanchez-Blazquez lived with Johnson in Grand Island after his wife died in 1988; he moved to a nursing home in 2007.
"We did our best," Johnson said. "We weren't going to put him somewhere just because he was old."
Sanchez-Blazquez had said his longevity was attributed to eating one banana per day and his daily dose of six Anacin tablets. His daughter had another theory.
"I think it's just because he's an independent, stubborn man," she said.
Besides his daughter, Sanchez-Blazquez had a 76-year-old son, John, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Guinness says the world's oldest person is a woman, 115-year-old Misao Okawa of Japan.
Young said 90 per cent of all supercentenarians are female and Sanchez-Blazquez had been the only male born in 1901 with proof of birth.
Arturo Licata, 111, of Italy, is now the leading candidate to be officially recognized by Guinness as the current world's oldest man, according to Young. Guinness will make a pronouncement on Licata at a later date.
The oldest authenticated person was Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who died at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, beating out Istanbul and Madrid

Buenos Aires, Argentina - The 2020 Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee announced Saturday.
Istanbul and Tokyo were the final two competitors for the honor. Madrid was eliminated in the first round of balloting. Madrid and Istanbul were tied in the initial balloting, but a runoff vote gave that edge to Istanbul 49-45. Tokyo had outpolled both of them in the initial round of International Olympic Committee voting, which took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Both Istanbul and Tokyo offered notable steps forward for the Olympic experience. Istanbul would be the first time that a primarily Muslim country would host the Olympics, while Tokyo would be the first Asian city to host it twice. Tokyo last hosted the Games in 1964.
Madrid had attempted three straight times to win the Games, but failed yet again despite a pitch for a "sensible, reliable and trustworthy" Olympics. Madrid officials noted that 80 percent of facilities which would have been used for the Games were already built and in use.
Tokyo, meanwhile, positioned itself as a safe option, indicating that no radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster would affect the Games in any way.
"Some may have concerns about Fukushima," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking in English, told the IOC on Saturday. "Let me assure you the situation is under control. It has never done and will never do any damage to Tokyo."
While Tokyo had appeared the favorite, concerns over safety had reportedly weakened the city's bid in recent weeks. Abe took pains to dispel those concerns under repeated questioning from the IOC. "There are no health related problems until now, nor will there be in the future," he said. "I make the statement to you in the most emphatic and unequivocal way."
All three cities were repeat bidders. In addition to Madrid's three tries, Tokyo had attempted twice in the last two bids, while Istanbul has now failed in five attempts.
Istanbul's bid was reportedly hampered by the ongoing war in neighboring Syria. But members of the Turkish delegation painted their nation as a bridge between Europe and Asia.
"We believe that hosting the Olympics in Istanbul will give this signal, this spirit of friendship and sharing and peace," said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "And our country is a place where there is a lot of unity and diversity, and that is the idea that we can share on a broader scale with the Olympics Games being hosted in Turkey."
The International Olympic Committee votes for the host cities via secret ballot, with multiple factors beyond simply economic viability coming into play for each voting member.
