Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann replaces Dharam Vira Gandhi as AAP leader in Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI: As an expected fallout of the brawl in Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Patiala MP Dharam Vira Gandhi -- who had raised his voice against the treatment meted out to now expelled Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan -- was removed as the party's leader in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In his place, the party appointed stand-up comedian and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann to articulate its views in the lower House.

This is an unprecedented rise for an entertainer who rode his punchlines through his poll campaign and eventually to Lok Sabha, although the jury may still be out on whether it is a sign of the readiness of the political class to put satire on the same pedestal as serious criticism.

Even though Gandhi's removal was explained by AAP merely as a "party decision", it is hardly lost on anyone that he has paid the price for siding with rebels. The Patiala MP gave considerable grief to Arvind Kejriwal and his aides when he endorsed the version of Bhushan and Yadav that the dominant faction resorted to strong-arm methods to intimidate dissidents and stifle their protest. That Gandhi had till then kept himself aloof from the ugly factional fight lent credence to the rebels' narrative.

Party member Ashutosh, while confirming the development, refused to go into the reason why Gandhi had to be dumped. "This is a party decision and we need not explain it," he said.

Mann, who had defended Kejriwal and his group, was pleased with the development, and he attacked Bhushan and Yadav saying the two leaders were sacked for carrying out anti-party activities. "I have raised maximum questions, participated in maximum debates and raised concerns about various bills in the House. If the party wants to give me more responsibilities, then I am ready to shoulder them," Mann said.

Mann's rise is significant as a leg-up to entertainers in Indian politics which has seen many actors enter the fray but rarely any rising beyond a point.

As a stand-up comedian, Mann also joins the league of several such personalities across the world who have literally laughed their way to election wins and upset political calculations.

From Italy to Iceland and Miyazaki to Minnesota, comedians and entertainers have left a trail of political surprise. Italian comedian Giuseppe Piero 'Beppe' Grillo spent much of his career pillorying political parties until he launched the 'Five Star Movement' which went on to win over 25% votes in the 2013 general elections in Italy. Icelandic standup comic Jon Gnarr fought mayoral elections in the capital Reykjavik as a "fun thing" only to be declared the winner to his and the political establishment's horror.

In 2007, Japanese comedian Hideo Higashikokubaru decided to run a serious campaign for governor of the Miyazaki Prefecture and won it in an atmosphere of complete dejection among voters with the political class. Most famous of all, however, was the victory of WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Jesse Ventura's win in Minnesota gubernatorial elections in 1998 when he defeated both the Democratic and Republican candidates.

Mann's rise comparatively is circumstantial but given that he lost no minute in siding with Kejriwal after the quarrel broke out in the party shows that he is equipped, besides a sense of humour, with political smarts. The reward that he has received from the party will encourage him to further burnish his 'loyalist' credentials.

Ease norms for MBBS seats, demand NRIs

Edmonton - After denied admission in the MBBS course in Punjab, many NRI students have approached the Medical Education and Research Department, seeking abolition of new rules under the All-India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMET) on July 6.
Earlier, all NRI quota seats in medical colleges of Punjab were filled on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in exams equivalent to Class XII of the PSEB or CBSE. Under the new rules, it is mandatory for every candidate to appear in the AIPMET and get a minimum 50 per cent marks to be eligible for MBBS and BDS courses.
The seven state medical colleges have 72 NRI quota seats, but the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) could find only two eligible candidates.
A number of other applications were rejected as the candidates had scored less than 50 per cent marks in AIPMET. Several others did not even appear in the AIPMET.
In their representation to Minister, Medical Education and Research Department, Punjab, the NRI students said they had passed their qualifying examination (equivalent to Class XII) from the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other countries. They maintained that they had different curriculum than the one taught in India, so they had no exposure to the Indian examination system.
Dyal Sharma, father of Akanksha Sharma, an NRI student, said: "Since the academic period in India and in several foreign countries is different, it is not practical for NRI students to travel to India and appear in the AIPMET."

NRI Sabha, Canada urged Punjab Govt. that these conditions must be relaxed else all NRI seats will remain vacant in the state, the students said in their representation.

Jaswinder Sidhu's Murder Case: Mother, uncle of alleged honour killing odered to be extradited to India over her slaying

Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu @ Jassi
Vancouver - The mother and uncle of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu have been ordered extradited to India to face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, 14 years after she was found dead.
Sidhu, also known as Jassi, 25, was found strangled and beaten to death in Punjab in 2000. Her mother, Malkit Sidhu, and uncle, Surjit Badesha, both of Maple Ridge, B.C., were arrested in 2012.
In court Friday, Justice Gregory Fitch ordered the siblings be extradited to India, to face accusations they killed Sidhu after she married Mithu Sidhu, a rickshaw driver she met in India a few years earlier, of whom her family did not approve.
The final decision on the extraditions will be made by Canada's justice minister, and that decision could be appealed.
Jaswinder Sidhu, 25, of Maple Ridge, B.C. worked at a Coquitlam beauty salon. Last year, co-worker Jody Wright testified at the extradition hearing for Malkit Sidhu and Badesha that Sidhu had told her the marriage had remained a secret for about a year because she had married for love, while her family wanted her to have an arranged marriage.
Justice Gregory Fitch heard that when the clandestine union accidentally came to light, what happened next was an "interrogation," during which Sidhu's own life and that of her husband were threatened.
Wright testified her friend told her she admitted to her family that she was married and was forced to sign a document seeking an annulment.
Jaswinder Sidhu married Mithu Sidhu for love, against the wishes of her family

"She was fearful of her life. She told me she didn't know what they were capable of," Wright said.
Even prior to Sidhu's admission of her marriage, Wright testified that her relatives would often come to the salon to keep an eye on her. After the admission, Wright told the court, their presence increased.
Sidhu arranged a code with Wright that would initiate a call to police. Wright said she made that call twice.
"The code word was, 'I'm sick or I have the flu.' That was my trigger to call the cops because she was locked in her bedroom," she told the court.
Finally, weeks before her death, Wright testified that Sidhu ran away from home, fleeing to the home of another co-worker, Tamara Lamirande, with the help of a Maple Ridge police officer.
Sidhu had heard from her husband who was still in India and the news was not good, Lamirande testified.
"She had been receiving phone calls from India from Mithu and his friends that he was being threatened, that his family was being threatened, his mother, and he was scared and that he was beaten up," she told Fitch.
"Jassi knew that the uncle had arranged people to go after Mithu and his family to scare him off, so that this marriage would break up."

After about a week at Lamirande's home, Sidhu flew to India to reunite with her husband, and bring him back to start a new life in Canada. She never returned.
Sidhu and her husband were attacked as they rode a scooter in a village near Sangrur, Punjab, in June 2000. According to reports in India, her husband was severely beaten and left for dead.
Sidhu was kidnapped and later strangled to death, her body left in a canal.
The case received extensive media coverage, which included a book and more than one television documentary.
Seven people have been convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in her death, but several of those convictions were overturned on appeal.
The family has denied any involvement.

The Community Kitchen at the Golden Temple Feeds up to 100,000 People a Day for Free

Amritsar - Free kitchen in Punjab, India run at the Sikhs’ holiest shrine produces 200,000 flat breads
( Fulke) and 1.5 tonnes of lentil soup daily (Daal) .

Two hundred thousand rotis (Indian flat bread), 1.5 tonnes of dal (lentil soup) and free food served to 100,000 people everyday are what makes the free kitchen run at the Sri Darbar Sahib  in the western Indian city of Amritsar stand apart.

By all measures, the kitchen (called langar in Punjabi ) is one of the largest free kitchens to be run anywhere in the world.

The concept of langars was initiated centuries ago by Sri  Guru Nanak Sahib, the founder of Sikh religion.

Sunday, November 17, is his 545th birth anniversary.

At the Langar, no one goes hungry – and everybody gets a hot meal regardless of caste, creed and religion.

All Sikh Gurudwaras (places of worship) have langars, but the one at Golden Temple – Sikhs’ holiest shrine – has little parallel.

The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), located in the city of Amritsar, India is a Sikh gurdwara (place of worship). It is the most well-known gurdwara and is considered a sacred place by Sikhs. It was first constructed in 1604 and was later rebuilt in 1764.
Located inside many gurdwaras are common kitchens/canteens known as a langar. At the langar, food is served to all visitors regardless of faith or background. Vegetarian food is often served to ensure that all people, even those with dietary restrictions, can eat together as equals.
The largest langar is found at the Golden Temple. It typically feeds roughly 40,000 people a day for free. On religious holidays and weekends, the langar can feed upwards of 100,000 people a day. This incredible feat is made possible through donations and volunteers. Below you will learn about the entire process at the Golden Temple from preparation to cleaning.

“Anyone can eat for free here and on an average we serve food to 100,000 people. On weekends and special occasions double the numbers of people visit the langar. The langar never stops and on an average 7,000 kg of wheat flour, 1,200 kg of rice, 1,300 kg of lentils, 500 kg of ghee (clarified butter) is used in preparing the meal every day,” says Harpreet Singh, manager of this huge kitchen.

“The free kitchen uses firewood, LPG gas and electronic bread makers for the cooking and we use around 100 LPG cylinders and 5,000 kilograms of firewood every day,” he adds.

The kitchen is run by 450 staff, helped by hundreds of other volunteers.

Sanjay Arora, 46, from New Delhi, comes to volunteer at the langar two days a month. “This is seva (service) for me. I feel happy after doing this service. This is not just free food because here you forget all the differences that separate humans from each other,” he says.

Volunteers also wash the 300,000 plates, spoons and bowls used in feeding the people. The food is vegetarian and the expenses are managed through donations from all over the world.

The yearly budget of the langar runs into hundreds of millions.

Takht directs DSGMC ex-chief Sarna to do religious service

High priests ask him to withdraw plea filed against construction of ’84 riots memorial
Amritsar, July 26
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh today directed former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Paramjeet Singh Sarna and his aide Manjeet Singh Sarna to immediately withdraw the petition filed by them in the Delhi High Court opposing the construction of a memorial at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in New Delhi to remember those killed in the 1984 riots.
The duo has also been asked to hold an ‘Akhand Path’ in the memory of Sikhs killed in the riots at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj. They too have been told to listen to gurbani, organise ‘langar’, and perform ‘sewa’ and ‘ardaas’ for the “mistakes committed by them”.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh announced the decision from the balcony of the highest temporal seat of Sikhs as Sarna and his aide stood outside. The Jathedar said the decision on Sarna was reached following deliberations among the Sikh high priests after the ex-DSGMC chief gave his clarification on the issue. While the Akal Takht Jathedar maintained that asking Sarna to organise an ‘Akhand Path’ was ‘Dharmik Sewa’ (religious service), Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh said it could be termed as ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment).
Sarna said he will certainly obey the directions of Akal Takht. “Whether the decision is right or wrong, it has come from Akal Takht and I fully accept it,” he said. Saran even took a dig at Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. “I am not Badal. I follow all the directions of Akal Takht,” he said.
Sarna, however, clarified that he had not resorted to any religious defiance. “I clarified my position before the Sikh high priests too, but Akal Takht still chose to give these directions.”
Saran said the Sikh clergy told him that he had committed a ‘big blunder’ while referring to some “objectionable contents” in the petition filed by him in the Delhi High Court. “I told them the paragraphs in question were removed from the petition the very next day,” he said.
There was difference of opinion among the high priests on the decision regarding Sarna. While the Akal Takht Jathedar was in favour of seeking an apology from Sarna for his mistakes, Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh differed with him. Earlier, Sarna, in his six-page clarification, said, “I had filed petition not to oppose the memorial but to remind the DSGMC that it could not be built on the premises of the gurdwara which is the epitome of the supreme sacrifice made by Guru Teg Bahadur.” He also gave various examples to support his argument. The Jathedar said a blueprint of the memorial had been sought from the DSGMC. “We will take a decision in this regard soon,” he said, adding that the affidavit filed by the DSGMC in the Delhi HC will also be examined.
SGPC member Navtej Singh Kauni, who was summoned for attending the congregation of Dera Sacha Sauda, could not make it to Amritsar as he was unwell. He has now been summoned in the next meeting. The Akal Takht Jathedar said he has issued directions to the SGPC for initiating legal action against those who tamper with Sikh Gurus’ photos on social networking sites.

Those who faced Takht’s wrath earlier
  • Former President Giani Zail Singh
  • Former Union Home Minister Buta Singh
  • Former Punjab CM Surjeet Singh Barnala
  • Budha Dal chief Baba Santa Singh
  • Nanaksar Kaleran (Ludhiana) chief Baba Ghala Singh

MD of Silver Oaks Hospital, wife booked for Rs 26-crore fraud for duping an NRI

Mohali, June 13
The Delhi Police has booked the managing director of Silver Oaks Hospital, Phase IX, Mohali, Dr Akhil Bhargav, his wife Dr Manjari Bhargav and five others for allegedly duping an NRI of Rs 26 crore. The NRI is the chairman of a US-based firm.

The other accused have been identified as Rajnish Rametra, Surinder Rametra, Vijay Rametra, Amardeep Singh Sidhu and HS Cheema.

A case under Sections 420, 406, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered at the economic offences wing of the Delhi Police against the accused following a complaint by Dr Aditya Khindaria, chairman and director of Kare Partners India Private Limited.

Dr Akhil Bhargava said last year they had lodged a complaint against the US-based firm. “The case is pending with the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Company Law Board and Arbitrator. The company wants to buy shares but is not ready to shell out money. It is an arm twisting tactics to create pressure on us,” said Dr Bhargava.

In his complaint, Dr Khindaria said he had paid Rs 26.20 crore to the Bhargava couple and others for 63,03,281 shares, which were equivalent to 51 per cent of the paid up share capital then.

“My company had started negotiations with the doctor couple in 2011 for acquiring 100 per cent shareholding in Kamesh Bhargava Hospitals and Research Centre Private Limited (Silver Oaks Hospital) for about Rs 52 crore. The couple signed the contract on the behalf of other persons, the minority shareholders, with us. We had transferred Rs 26.20 crore in their account to acquire 51 per cent shares and signed the transaction documents. As these persons (the accused) did not fulfil their commitments as agreed in the documents, we gave them more time, but to no avail,” alleged Dr Khindaria in the FIR.

He alleged that the accused forged some important documents, including the annual returns and filing of the share holding patterns, which resulted in reducing the shareholding pattern of Kare Partners from 51 per cent to 35.92 per cent.

“With this, we have been cheated of 18,63,357 shares of the company which is equivalent to 15 per cent of the paid up equity,” alleged Dr Khindaria, while claiming that one of the accused had also threatened him.

Singer Nachattar Gill booked for rape

Ludhiana, June 13
Noted Punjabi pop singer Nachattar Gill and three others have been booked for allegedly raping and duping an aspiring model.

The city police claimed that the accused develpoed physical ties with the girl on the pretext of helping her become a top model and sending her abroad. They have been booked under Sections 376, 420, 506 and 120-B of the IPC and the IT Act 2000, for rape, fraud and criminal conspiracy.

Gurveer Singh Station House officer (SHO), PAU police station, said the accused were booked last night following a thorough investigation by senior officers.

Questions are being asked at the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Ishwar Singh, ordering an FIR against the singer on his last day in office.

The girl, a resident of Haibowal, told the police that the singer took her to a hotel in Chandigarh, where he gave her a drink laced with sedatives and took objectionable pictures of her. She alleged that the three other accused raped her in a similar fashion at a hotel in Singapore.

The matter first came to light in February when the victim approached the Commissioner of Police and the latter marked an inquiry into the case. At first Additional DCP- I Nilamberi Jagdale and ACP- West Gurpreet Kaur Purewal were asked to investigat the case. The inquiry was later shifted to ACP-North J Elanchezhian.

Gill allegedly told the investigating officers that a friend of the aspiring model was pressuring him into settling the issue by paying him Rs 1 crore. The girl alleged that she came in contact with the pop singer during a beauty pageant at Jalandhar in 2006 where Gill was one of the judges. She was adjudged the first runners-up at the pageant.

She claimed that during the function they exchanged mobile numbers. The two started talking to each other frequently and soon their friendship turned intimate. The girl met the singer at hotels in Phillaur and Ludhiana.

The girl said her ties with the singer turned sour after she asked him why she was not being featured in his music albums. She alleged that city residents Charandeep Singh of Hambra Road and Jagdeep Singh and Raja of Waddi Haibowal took advantage of her plight. They took Rs 20 lakh from her parents promising to send her abroad.

She claimed that when they were in Singapore, Raja and Jagdeep raped her and also made an MMS.

She alleged Charandeep established ties with her on the pretext of helping her seek legal action against those

Avtar Henry’s citizenship issue: Notice issued to Centre on PIL

Chandigarh, April 8
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued a notice to the Union Home Ministry on a PIL filed by Jalandhar-based RTI activist Ajay Seghal for becoming party to the revision petition filed by former minister Avtar Henry against the termination of his Indian citizenship. Sehgal had brought Avtar Henry’s citizenship issue under the judicial scanner.

Taking up the matter, Justice RN Raina issued a notice to Union Home Secretary and to Avtar Henry for April 23.

Directing Jalandhar Commissioner of Police to examine the complaint against Punjab's former minister regarding his citizenship, the High Court in December last year had made it clear that an FIR would have to be registered in case the allegations were prima facie found to be true.

The Bench of Chief Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain had directed the Commissioner to examine the complaint dated September 27, 2012, filed by Sehgal and to order registration of an FIR against him, if a prima facie case was found to have been made out, within two months.

Sehgal, through advocate HC Arora, had stated that Avtar Henry acquired the British citizenship in 1969 under the name of Avtar Singh. He came to India on the British passport the same year and obtained an Indian passport, which was renewed from time to time. He also registered himself as a voter in the Jalandhar (North) constituency and contested the elections in 1986, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2012.

Turbaned Tornado Fauja Singh, world’s oldest marathoner, retires at 101

Fauja Singh after his last race
in Hongkong
For the world’s oldest marathon man, the final finish line is nigh. Two months short of his 102nd birthday, Fauja Singh hanged up his racing shoes after completing the 10km race that was held in conjunction with the annual Hong Kong Marathon today. “Racing is getting very tough for me,” Singh said, speaking through an interpreter in Hong Kong (he is a British national but only speaks Punjabi). “I have mixed feelings but I feel I must retire on a high.
“I am hurt by the fact that I am going to retire. I do not really like the word ‘retire’ because I can still run and jump on a bus. It’s a sense of negativity that I have never experienced before.
“I fear that when I stop running, people will no longer love me. At the moment, everyone loves me. I hope nobody will forget or ignore me. When you become old, you become like a child and you want the attention.” Singh has certainly not lacked attention. Indeed, Adidas used the turbaned Sikh alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali in their “Impossible is nothing” advertising campaign. Singh was born in Punjab on 1 April 1911. He emigrated to England in the 1990s and lives with one of his sons in Ilford. He is the eldest member of a group of Indian-born East End runners called “Sikhs in the City”.
He ran his first marathon in 2000 and clocked his fastest time at the 26.2-mile distance, 5hr 40min 04sec, in Toronto in 2003. He was 92 at the time. He completed the 2011 race in Toronto, as a 100-year-old, in 8hr 11min 06sec.
Though “the Turbaned Tornado” bows out from competitive racing today, he intends to keep on running for fun in training. “Running is my life,” Singh said. “I will keep running to inspire the masses and for my personal health. I will keep running for at least four hours daily.” “I have said before that I will carry on running as it keeps me alive. The reason for my good health is that I exercise daily and follow a proper diet regime. I take happiness in the biggest portions, though my actual diet is very small,” he said.
"Nowadays, people are more interested in going to a gym, but I feel that if they exercise regularly on their own they can be physically and mentally strong. Daily exercise will keep you away from all diseases."
Singh, who stands 5ft 8in, says he does not suffer from any physical ailments. A torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympics, his one regret is not being able to speak and read English.
He emigrated to England in the 1990s but is a little foggy on the exact year. "I cannot remember for sure," he said. "I used to visit my children in England in the 1980s and eventually settled for good in the 1990s. I moved to England as a way of overcoming a traumatic time in my life. My family thought it best." The trauma was caused by the deaths of his wife and two of their children.

Turbaned Tornado
  • Fauja Singh, nicknamed the “Turbaned Tornado,” finished the Hong Kong marathon’s 10-kilometre race in 1 hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. It was his last race
  • Singh became the oldest man to run a full marathon at Toronto in 2011. But his record was not recognised by Guinness World Records as he didn’t have a birth certificate to prove his age
  • In 1999, at the age of 89, he decided to run marathons for charities. His first charity was for premature babies.

Chandigarh: Eleven candidates are in the fray for Moga by-poll, slated for February 23, after the scrutiny of nomination papers.

Meanwhile, Election Commission of India also clarified that EVMs are completely tamper-proof.

Disclosing this here today, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab said the Commission has issued detailed instructions regarding security and storage of EVMs.

The clarification comes in the wake of Punjab Congress working committee member Jagmeet Singh Brar recent allegation about the possible tamperability of EVMs in the media.

He had demanded the use of EVMs equipped with VVPAT system for Moga election but ECI did not receive any such letter from Jagmeet Brar, said the release.

District election officer has reported that representatives of all political parties were satisfied with the first level check of EVMs and nobody raised any objection at that time. The entire proceedings were videographed, release said.

In the circumstances it is improper to make such baseless allegations, CEO Punjab in the release noted, saying that EVMs used by the Election Commission were completely tamper-proof.

"It is not possible to hack into them," it said.

SGPC sets up panel to ‘rewrite’ Sikh history

Amritsar, January 17
In a significant move, the SGPC has set up a five-member panel, comprising Sikh intellectuals, to “rewrite” the Sikh history after thoroughly exploring the subject afresh. The decision was reached in a meeting of the SGPC executive committee held in Chandigarh recently.

In a statement released here today, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said the committee comprised of Punjabi University VC Dr Jaspal Singh, Dr Prithipal Singh Kapoor, Dr Kirpal Singh, Dr JS Grewal, and Dr Indu Banga. SGPC secretary Roop Singh will be the coordinator of the panel. Makkar attributed the move to the demand from Sikh sangat and various religious groups from India and abroad in this regard. He said the decision was taken in view of the sentiments of the Sikh community.

Though Makkar could not be contacted for further details, sources in the SGPC said the idea was at a nascent stage and nothing had been finalised yet. The sources, however, said the Sikh history would be rewritten in 10 volumes, of which the first two would dwell on the life and the times of the Sikh gurus, while the remaining eight volumes will be about Sikh history in the British era, which will include the period of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Meanwhile, Sikh intellectuals and groups have raised doubts over the move. Noted Sikh scholar Bhai Ashok Singh Bagarian said this was not the right time to revise Sikh history due to the controversy that surrounded the SGPC’s decision to participate in the Kumbh Mela. He said the SGPC had already set up a panel to update the Sikh history and it had released the first two volumes. He said he was also associated with the project and they were now working on its fourth volume.

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Elections

SAD (B) to release manifesto today
New Delhi, January 17
Intensifying the SAD (Badal) campaign for elections to the 46-member general house of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) slated for January 27, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today addressed eminent Sikhs working in various spheres in the national Capital.

In a gathering of over 100 people, comprising businessmen, educationists, former Army officers, among others, Badal, speaking in Punjabi, urged the Sikhs to vote in the elections. “You people are the voice of the community. I request you to vote for change in order to better the prevailing situation. If people think that they do not want to participate, they would not be doing justice to the Sikh community,” said the CM.

He said the manifesto of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) will be released tomorrow on the occasion of Gurpurb (Guru Gobind Singh’s birth anniversary). The SAD (Badal) is going all out to wrest control of the cash-rich and powerful Delhi gurdwaras from the Sarna brothers -- Paramjit Singh and Harvinder Singh -- who are of the SAD (Delhi). They have been at the helm for a decade.

“The ruling party has disgraced the community by violating the rules of Akal Takht several times. There have been complaints of corruption and outsider involvement in the management of gurdwaras. Change need to be brought for protecting the rights of the community,” said Badal.

Talking on the deteriorating level of DSGMC controlled schools, Badal said that they once used to be the benchmark in the field of education. “During our regime in the committee, the schools used to give tough competition to public schools. But now, no parent wants to opt for them,” said Badal.

With the entire leadership of SAD (Badal) camping in the national capital, campaigning has intensified for election to the 46-member general house of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee slated for January 27. Though the issues are unrelated, this election might set the trend for the assembly elections in Delhi due later this year.

17 Indians in Sharjah murder case can finally return home

Chandigarh/Dubai, January 17
A long-drawn legal battle finally come to an end today as 17 Indian boys, who have been languishing in Sharjah jail for more than three years, got the final approval from the Sharjah court and were cleared for deportation.

All of them had got death sentence, which the court had waived in 2011 after Dubai businessman SP Singh Oberoi paid blood money of one million US dollars to the parents of the victim Mishri Khan.

But, permission to leave the United Arab Emirates was held up as a civil petition seeking compensation for those injured in the Mishri Khan murder case was filed.

The case pertains to 2009 when a group of Indian workers clashed with a group of workers from Pakistan in which Mishri Khan of Sargodha was killed and two of his cousins — Mushtaq Ahmed and Shahid Iqbal — were grievously injured.

Subsequently 17 Indian boys were charged for a drunken brawl leading to murder and arson. They were subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. It was under pressure from the media that the Indian mission in UAE hired a team of lawyers to defend the Indian boys who pleaded innocent. An appeal was filed in the Sharjah Appeal Court against the orders of the Sharjah Court in April 2010.

It was during hearing of the appeal that the Sharjah Court asked the defence team if it was prepared for settlement under Diya - blood money - to which it reluctantly agreed holding that it had a fool proof case.

Oberoi paid up the blood money and the court also endorsed the settlement deal and waived the death sentence in 2011. But then the civil petition was filed and it took more than a year for adjudication and forced the 17 Indian boys to have an extended stay in the Sharjah jail even after their death sentence had been waived.

SP Singh Oberoi says that with the pronouncement of a joint compensation of AED 1,00,000 for Mushtaq Ahmed and Shahid Iqbal for grievous injuries they received in the clash will now get Indian boys released.
