With love from Simla to Tokyo: Bollywood hero Joy Mukherjee left the mark

Joy Mukherjee
Joy Mukherjee
It is hard to define Joy Mukherjee. You could call him a chocolate-boy hero with an infectious smile. Or you could look at that strapping frame to realise why many in the sixties felt he was the closest Bollywood had to Rock Hudson machismo.
Co-stars would define him as the ultimate prankster who never left space for a dull moment on the sets.
Joy Mukherjee was an enigma in ways more than one. His meteoric rise thanks to sixties jubilee hits such as Love In Tokyo, Ziddi, Shagird and Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon was as abrupt as his bowing out of the limelight after around a decade of glory.
For the record Joy breathed his last in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on Friday after a prolonged illness at the age of 73. The man, who made broad-shouldered athleticism a fashionable image for the Bollywood hero long before the Khans and the Kumars discovered the gym, spent his last days on the ventilator.
'His wife Neelam Mukherjee was by his side when he passed away at 9.30 am on Friday. We are yet to decide the time and venue of the cremation,' said the actor's spokesperson R.R. Pathak.
Joy is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Hailing from a film family, Joy made his debut at the age of 21 in the 1960 hit Love In Simla opposite Sadhana. His father Sashadhar Mukherjee, a noted filmmaker who co-founded Filmalaya Studios, produced the film. A series of hits followed.

Love in Tokyo
The legacy of the Mukherjees continues through a new generation of stars in the clan.
Kajol and Tanisha are daughters of Joy's brother Shomu Mukherji while Joy was an uncle of Rani Mukerji and director Ayan Mukerji.
For his fans, Joy Mukherjee will continue living in some of most unforgettable love songs ever recorded in Bollywood, including Woh Hain Aara Khafa Khafa' (Shagrid), 'O Mere Shahe Khuba' (Love In Tokyo) and the title song of Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon.

Actor Joy Mukherjee dies at 73

Mumbai, Mar 9 (PTI) Veteran actor Joy Mukherjee, who starred in several Bollywood hits in the '60s, passed away this morning after prolonged illness at a hospital here. He was 73. "He passed away today morning at 9.30 am. He died due to prolonged illness and old age. His lungs were not functioning and he could not breathe, hence he was on ventilator. His condition was critical since last three days," Joy Mukherhee's spokesperson told PTI. The actor was admitted to the Leelavati hospital on Monday. "He was running with high fever and was unconscious and his overall condition was critical since three-four days," spokesperson said. Mukherjee comes from a film family. His father Sashadhar Mukherjee was married to legendary actor Ashok Kumar's sister Sati Devi and was the co-founder of Filmalaya Studios. His brothers are Deb Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee. Shomu is married to actress Tanuja & their daughters are actresses Kajol and Tanisha. Incidently, his father was skeptical about Mukherjee's movie career. He agreed only after Agha jani Kashmeri convinced him. Agha jani wrote the script of 1"Love in Simla", Mukherjee's debut film opposite Sadhana in 1960. He went on to delivered several hit films like hits like "Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon", "Love in Tokyo", "Ziddi", "Ek Musafir Ek Hasina" to name a few. After his career dried up with the emergence of stars like Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna, Mukherjee ventured into direction with films like "Love in Bombay" (1974), "Chhaila Babu" (1977), "Saanjh Ki Bela" (1981) and "Umeed" (1989). The actor is survived by wife Neelam and they have three children - two sons and a daughter. Veteran actor Dilip Kumar with his wife Saira Banu and music composer-singer Bappi Lahiri had visited the ailing actor-filmmaker yesterday.

Joy Mukherjee was leading star of 60s: Amitabh Bachchan

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has paid homage to the veteran actor JoyMukherjee, saying he was a leading star of 1960s.
Bachchan tweeted his grief over the sudden demise of Mukherjee.
"Joy Mukherjee passes away. Leading man and a star during his time. Condolences to members of his family and prayers," he posted.
Mukherjee passed away this morning after prolonged illness atLilavati hospital. The 73-year-old actor was not keeping well for quite sometime.
Deb, younger brother of Joy, said his brother was a moral strength in his life.
"He was a great brother, a good friend and a brilliant actor. He has been my support system. He was my moral strength," said Deb.
Deb Mukherjee has acted in few films alongside his elder brother, Joy, including, Haiwan (1977), Ek Bar Mooskura Do (1972).
"We have grown up together there are lots of small moments and we are all going to definitely miss him a lot," he said.

MANDATE 2012: PUNJAB

This will be Badal Sr’s 5th term in office

Chandigarh, March 9
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supremo Parkash Singh Badal is all set to be sworn in as Punjab CM for a historic fifth term on March 14 with the SAD-BJP alliance today unanimously electing him as its legislature party leader. The swearing-in would take place at the Banda Bahadur Memorial at Chhapar Chiri and several top BJP leaders are expected to attend.
After unanimously being elected leader of the SAD Legislature Party yesterday, Badal Senior was BJP-SAD legislators’ unanimous choice to be leader of the Vidhan Sabha today.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal told The Tribune, “Badal Sahib will remain Chief Minister for as long as he wishes. He is the party’s senior-most leader whose contribution to the state and the party is unparalleled.”
Badal’s name was suggested by BJP observer Shanta Kumar and proposed by party state chief Ashwani Sharma. After it was seconded by Sukhbir and endorsed by BJPLegislature Party leader Bhagat Chunni Lal, others like Jathedar Tota Singh and Madan Mohan Mittal welcomed the decision with thunderous claps.
The Akali stalwart is the alliance’s choice to head the government for several reasons. First, this was an electoral promise made by the SAD. Secondly, with the party securing 56 seats and the support of three Independents besides 12 members of the BJP, the government is firmly in place for the next five years. So, Sukhbir is in no hurry to receive the baton from his father.
After an emotional Sukhbir hugged his father, Badal Senior took a moment to respond as his thoughts went back to his wife Surinder Kaur, who passed away last year. Quick to return to the present, Badal said, “I have no words to express my gratitude to all the MLAs who have given me this enormous responsibility.” His characteristic smile also returned.
When PS Badal took over as Chief Minister for the first time in 1969, he was the country’s youngest CM. When he would be sworn-in for a record fifth time on March 14, he will be the country’s oldest CM.
Talking about the SAD-BJP alliance, Badal said the relationship was very close to his heart. Despite either party’s performance, we will stay together through thick and thin, he said. Coming from Badal, a seasoned politician, the words were perhaps meant to assure the BJP that it had nothing to fear, even though the SAD could form a government on its own.
After the meeting, the Badals, Bhagat Chuni Lal, Ashwani Sharma and Shanta Kumar drove to the Punjab Raj Bhawan and handed over a copy of resolution electing Parkash Singh Badal as leader of the SAD-BJP Legislature Party to Governor Shivraj V Patil. The Governor has invited Badal to form the government in Punjab.

Lobbying on for Cabinet berths
Chandigarh, March 9
As Parkash Singh Badal prepares to take over the reigns of the government for the fifth time, there is pressure on him and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal from various quarters to induct certain legislators in his Cabinet.

Though firmly in control, the SAD leadership has so far showed no signs that it will succumb to either the “drug mafia” or the “sand mafia” or even “landgrabbers”. On the contrary, Sukhbir Badal has announced that his first priority will be to rid the state of corruption. The party thinktank is identifying legislators whose induction in the Cabinet will improve the party image after the splendid victory.
The biggest task for the alliance is to identify a person who can take the state out of the fiscal mess. There is hardly anyone who fits the bill. There is talk that SAD president, who will also be the Deputy CM, may keep this portfolio with himself for the moment.
Those likely be find place in the Cabinet are Janmeja Singh Sekhon (Maur), Tota Singh (Dharamkot), Sikandar Singh Maluka (Rampura Phul), Adesh Partap (Patti), Bikram Majithia (Majitha), Gulzar Singh Ranike (Attari), Gurbachan Singh Babbehali (Gurdaspur), Sohan Singh Thandal (Chabbewal), Surjit Singh Rakhra (Samana), Parminder Dhindsa ( Sunam), Ajit Singh Kohar (Shahkot), Jagir Kaur (Bholath), Swarn Singh Phillaur (Kartarpur), Sharanjit Dhillon (Sahnewal) and Harmit Singh Sandhu (Tarn Taran).
The BJP, which has 12 seats, is expected to see a drop in the number of its ministers, unless Badal gets magnanimous. In the last Vidhan Sabha, the BJP had 19 legislators, so it had five ministers. Now the number could be 3 or 4. Chuni Lal Bhagat (Jalandhar West), Madan Mohan Mittal (Anandpur Sahib), Surjit Kumar Jyani (Fazilka), Manoranjan Kalia (Jalandhar Central), Amarjit Shahi (Dasuya) and Navjot Kaur Sidhu (Amritsar East) are among the BJP MLAs who may get a place in the Cabinet.
Not all will get Cabinet ranks. Some will be attached to senior ministers. Some will be adjusted as Parliamentary Secretaries or chairpersons of boards and corporations.

Youth brigade did it for Akalis, won 11 seats

Chandigarh, March 9
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured the youth vote with 11 of its 13 candidates turning victorious at the hustings. In comparison, the Congress bagged only two of the six seats allotted to its youth members.

Six young Akali candidates won in the Majha belt - Youth SAD chief Bikram Majithia (Majitha), Inderbir Bolaria (Amritsar South), Amarpal Bonny (Ajnala), Manjit S Manna (Baba Bakala), Bajit S Jalalusma (Jandiala) and Harmeet Singh (Tarn Taran). In the Doaba belt, Pawan Kumar Teenu was victorious from Adampur. In Malwa,Virender Kaur Loomba (Shutrana), Harpreet Singh (Malout), Parminder Dhindsa (Sunam) and Manpreet Ayali (Dakha) emerged winners.
Remarkably, most of the Youth SAD candidates won their seats with respectable margins. Several downed Congress stalwarts: Jalalusma defeated former Excise Minister Sardool Singh, Ayali defeated Jassi Khangura and Bolaria defeated Jasbir Singh Dimpa.
The Congress was able to win only two of the six seats allotted to its Youth Congress members- Kuljit Nagra from Fatehgarh Sahib and Raja Waring from Gidderabaha. The party’s young candidates were defeated in Ferozepur Rural, Payal, Balachaur and Majitha.
There seems to be two factors behind the success of young SAD candidates. One, most of them were groomed by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal during 2002-2007 when the SAD-BJP was in Opposition.
Second, Youth SAD president Bikram Majithia energised the youth wing holding district-level meetings and roadshows during the last one year. Majithia supervised the campaign of the youth wing leaders in Majha besides campaigning for those in Doaba and Malwa.
The Punjab Youth Congress could not be energised with its state president Vikramjit Chaudhary busy campaigning for his father Chaudhary Santokh in Phillaur. The Congress could not win this seat.
The SAD empowered its youth leaders with Parambans Romana appointed Improvement Trust Chairman in Faridkot, Kanwarjit Barkandi as District Cooperative Bank Chairman at Muktsar and Manpreet Ayali as Zila Parishad Chairman in Ludhiana. These appointments were a game changer for the SAD and ensured the youth vote did not shift to the PPP in a big way.
Game Changer: FACTORS BEHIND SUCCESS
  • Most of the young Akali candidates were groomed by SAD chief Sukhbir Badal during 2002-2007 when the SAD-BJP alliance was in the Opposition
  • Bikram Majithia energised the Akali youth wing holding district-level meetings and several roadshows in the past one year
  • SAD empowered its youth leaders with Parambans Romana appointed Improvement Trust chief in Faridkot, Kanwarjit Barkandi as District Coop Bank chief at Muktsar and Manpreet Ayali as Zila Parishad chief in Ludhiana. So the youth voted for the SAD.
SEEMA KUMARI (33) Bhoa
Chandigarh: From village sarpanch to the youngest woman legislator from Bhoa in Pathankot. This sums up the political journey of 33-year-old Seema Kumari of the BJP who has maid her maiden entry into the Punjab Legislative Assembly. She was 29 when she was elected sarpanch of Bharial Lahri village in Pathankot during the last panchayat elections. Her husband is a district BJP leader. She believes that one does not necessarily need to go to a school or a college. “I understand the needs and requirements of my electorate as I am a grassroots worker,” she says. She routed her nearest rival Balbir Ram of the Congress, by 12,129 votes, a testimony to her claim. She is sure to provide a new dimension to Dalit politics in state. “I am aware that my constituency lacks development. I need to start from the scratch. One just needs a strong will and consistency to see one’s efforts bear fruit,” she says. A mother of two, she says being a mother makes her sensitive to the needs of others.
IS BOLARIA (31), Amritsar South
Amritsar: Inderbir Singh Bolaria is the youngest legislator in the assembly. He already has his priorities outlined for the next five years. Bolaria, who was Chief Parliamentary Secretary in the previous government, says:
“It feels great to be re-elected. I feel blessed that I have got an opportunity to serve the people so early in life.” Regarding his success mantra, he says : “We didn’t merely talk about development, but worked on the ground to bring about a change in people’s lives. We ensured that every penny was properly utilised.”
He says he will finish pending works like removal of the Bhagtanwala garbage dump, setting up a solid waste management plant and having a sewerage system in the remaining parts of the constituency.
The young Bolaria intends to build a multi-utility sports stadium and come down heavily on drug peddlers. “Anybody found luring youth to drugs will not be spared.”
RAJWINDER (34), NIHALSINGHWALA
Moga: March 9 Riding on the legacy of her father-in-law, young Rajwinder Kaur defeated sitting MLA Ajit Singh Shant of the Cong by 572 votes. She is the second youngest candidate in the assembly.
Rajwinder is a new entrant in politics. Her father-in-law, the late Zora Singh, was a local Akali leader. He was elected to the assembly twice in 1985 and 2002 from this constituency. Rajwinder hails from Kairon village in Taran Taran. She did her plus two from Kairon High School. Her parents enjoyed cordial ties with the family of the late Chief Minister Partap Singh Kairon. After marriage, she joined the village ‘anganwari’ as a worker. Her husband Ajmer Singh is Panchayat Secretary. She has two daughters and a son.
RAJA WARRING, (33), GIDDERBAHA
Muktsar: Except for Amrinder Singh Warring “Raja” and a few Congress men, none would have thought that the Congress would emerge winner in the once Akali stronghold-Gidderbaha, defeating former Akali Finance Minister and now PPP chief Manpreet Singh Badal, who came third. An elated Raja Warring, who is close to AICC general secretary Rahul
Gandhi, says: “I belong to an ordinary family and none from my family has
ever contested the elections. I started my political journey after becoming
president of DCC and never looked back.”
Raja, who is a good orator, says Manpreet was once popular with the people but he failed on all fronts in the past five years. “He could not even solve the problem of water-logging in the area and the people realised it was time to vote for a new face.”
HARPREET Singh (33), MALOUT
Muktsar: This 33-year-old civil engineer, son of a former minister, started his political career in 2007, when he was elected MLA from Malout.
This time he defeated two former Congress MLAs -Nathu Ram and Baldev Singh Ballamgarh, a Congress rebel who contested as an Independent.
Harpreet Singh credits the late Bibi Surinder Kaur Badal, CM’s wife, for his success in politics.
“During campaigning, development was the lone agenda. The people understood it as they had seen Bibi ji’s keen interest in Malout. So, they voted in SAD’s favour. I will request Badal Sahib to allot more funds to this area so that I can fulfill Bibiji’s dream ,” says Harpreet.
He says the local people have two major demands - an under-bridge and a drainage line. “These two issues top my agenda. ”

High expectations from SAD-BJP’s second term
What a cross-section of people want from the new government. This is what they had to say

Chandigarh, March 9
Pargat Singh, who has won the Jalandhar Cantt seat for the SAD, is the first- ever Olympian in the history of post-Partition Punjab to be elected to the assembly. He quit his job as Director of Sports to enter electoral politics.
Pargat Singh also has the distinction of leading India in two consecutive Olympic Games. After resigning as Director of Sports on January 10, he had only 18 days to campaign in his constituency where his rival was well- entrenched. But he took up the challenge and turned victorious.
His father-in-law Darbara Singh represented the SAD in Parliament. He was Governor of Rajasthan when he died.
At one time, Pargat Singh was in the race for the Congress ticket for the Jalandhar parliamentary seat. But he lost out to Rana Gurjit Singh.
Pargat Singh held the rank of Superintendent of Police before he was absorbed as Director of Sports a month before the announcement of the assembly elections in December last year.
Pargat Singh made his way into the inner circle of SAD chief and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal after he played a pivotal role in holding the two Kabaddi World Cups and in creating sports infrasture, including floodlit synthetic hockey fields.
Even if Pargat Singh had continued in the Police Department, he would have retired at best as Deputy Inspector-General of Police. That may be one reason why he left the police to join the Sports Department.
For a newcomer, a victory margin of 6,707 votes is an impressive one. Only a couple of months ago Pargat Singh had decided to make Chandigarh his permanent home.
In view of his popularity among the youth and sportspersons, he seems to be a natural choice for appointment as Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The only other hockey Olympian to have achieved success in electoral politics has been Aslam Sher Khan who entered Parliament from Madhya Pradesh. Test cricket players like Chetan Chauhan, Kirti Azad, Navjot Sidhu and Mohammed Azharuddin have been elected to the Lok Sabha.

Moga, March 9
Former DGP Paramdeep Singh Gill, who was handpicked by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to contest from the Moga assembly constituency, had to face defeat primarily because of the PPP factor.
Ravinder Dhaliwal, PPP candidate, secured 9,910 votes and Gill lost at the hands of sitting Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain by a margin of 4,625 votes. Clearly, Gill’s poll strategists underestimated the PPP’s potential to play spoiler.
Also, the Congress managed to quell rebellion in the Moga constituency with Vijay Sathi retiring from the contest in favour of Jain a few days before the polls. This helped the Congress win this seat.

Who will be the CM in Uttarakhand?

Birender Singh, Congress general secretary and in charge of state affairs, addresses a press conference in Dehradun on Friday.
Birender Singh, Congress general secretary and in charge of state affairs, addresses a press conference in Dehradun on Friday.

Dehradun, March 9
Birender Singh, Congress general secretary and in charge of the Uttarkhand party affairs, has said that any capable leader of the Congress whether a Member of Parliament or a legislator or from even outside could be chosen as the Chief Minister of the state.
Addressing mediapersons after parading party legislators before state Governor Margaret Alva, Birender Singh claimed that three Independents and the lone Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (P) legislator had decided to support the Congress government without any pre-condition.
“All these legislators and the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (Panwar faction) have decided to join the Congress government to strengthen the secular forces in the state for the overall development of the state,” he said.
He further announced that Union Minister of Health and senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad would be coming to Dehradun on Saturday to ascertain the views of the party legislators on the issue of leadership of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
“After ascertaining the views of the legislators, he will convey the same to the party president Sonia Gandhi so that a decision could be taken,” he said.
Birender Singh said the views of the Independent legislators and the UKD (P) would also be considered on the issue.

HARPREET MURDER CASE

Court asks counsel to bring documents, if any
Patiala, March 9
As the proceedings in the murder case of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of former SGPC president and SAD MLA Bibi Jagir Kaur started in the Court of Special Judge (CBI cases), Balbir Singh here today, the court has given a week time to the defence and the prosecuting agency to bring it to the notice of the court, if anything pertaining to the case is left out.
Defence counsel SS Kler said, "The court has ordered that the final opportunity for placing any document etc regarding the case, by the defence and the prosecuting agency, will be the next date of hearing fixed for March 16."
CBI counsel RK Handa said during the court proceedings, the CBI reiterated that they have entire record of the statements given by the complainant Kamaljit. "Since the murder case of Harpreet comes under the category of those cases, wherein the crime was committed for family prestige, 'honour killing', even if the witness turns hostile, the statements given by him earlier, will be relied upon.”

Jats harden stand, say no to talks

Hisar, March 9
The deadlock between the pro-quota Jat protesters and state government continued today, with both sides sticking to their guns.
In further embarrassment to the Hooda Government, protesters hardened their stand, refusing to cremate the body of the youth who had died in a clash with the police on Monday, and demanding release of their arrested leaders.
The administration, meanwhile, today denied there was any move to release the arrested protesters.
Even as DGP Ranjiv Dalal and Deputy Commissioner Amit Aggarwal appealed to the Jat protesters to cremate the body of the youth, the agitating community members decided to intensify their agitation.
The police has registered criminal cases against over 125 villagers and arrested 10 of them on charges of rioting and assault on public servants to prevent them from performing official duty.

International Women's Day Special

S Satyavathi is first woman loco pilot of Andhra Pradesh
S Satyavathi
Making waves: S Satyavathi
Hyderabad, March 9
For S Satyavathi, Women’s Day turned out to be a truly special day in her career. She stormed yet a male bastion to become the first woman loco pilot in Andhra Pradesh.
Joining the Railways in 1999 as an assistant loco pilot, Satyavathi’s tryst with the destiny came, quite fittingly, on Women’s Day when she drove a suburban train in the city. Without any assistant pilot, she independently handled the Mathrubhoomi Ladies Special MMTS train from Falaknuma to Lingampally.
The feat has earned her the distinction of being the first independent woman loco pilot in the state. The Platform Number 7 at Secunderabad Railway Station, the headquarters of South Central Railway, wore a festive look as officials and members of the railway unions felicitated Satyavathi before she took control of the engine, thus breaking yet another traditional barrier.
Satyavathi, who has now earned a place in the hall of fame of woman Loco pilots in Indian Railways, joined the Railways as assistant loco pilot in 1999 at Bengaluru. She was later transferred to the Secunderabad division. She was promoted as loco pilot (goods) in September 2005 and had been shuttling goods trains in and around Hyderabad before her present promotion.
After successfully clearing her MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport Service) training in January this year, she was exposed to live handling and requisite track learning and was subsequently found fit to run MMTS trains in suburban sections of the twin cities. Her biggest achievement is that she will be single-handedly managing and working on MMTS trains, without the help of any assistant loco pilot.
“I am honoured as the MMTS has now become the life line of the poor and middle-class people living in the suburban areas of twin cities,” Satyavathi said.
Driving loco trains, especially the long-distance passenger trains, is a tough job. The work timings are not fixed and it involves continuous travel. The Railways has a meticulous system of training its loco pilots and only suitable candidates, after rigorous training, are inducted into the service.
The Secunderabad division of the SCR has four more women assistant loco pilots being groomed to be loco pilots in future.

Obesity-related liver disease on the upswing in India

Chandigarh, March 9
Obesity-related liver disease could well go on to become the number one cause of liver cirrhosis (permanent and irreversible scarring of the liver) in India as in the US.
Indians with waist circumference and Body Mass Index (BMI) lower than the Americans face the same risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which has so far been typically associated with western lifestyles, low physical activity, high-calorie diet and high obesity.
A significant new study from West Bengal has shown high prevalence of NAFLD among members of rural population who were neither alcohol consumers nor overweight or obese.
“The study indicates that Asian Indians anywhere globally could be at higher risk of having fatty liver disease than previously thought. Indians who believe they are safer being thinner than Americans and less obese are actually at a disproportionately higher risk of NAFLD than the Americans,” Dr Patrick S Kamath, Professor of Hepatology from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine today told The Tribune in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the International Liver Summit being organised by Fortis Hospital, Mohali.
The summit, which has over 40 global liver experts among participants, was inaugurated today by Prof Stephen A Locarnini, Director, World Health Organisation Regional Reference Laboratory for viral hepatitis B.
About 8.5 per cent of the population sampled in the West Bengal study was found to be having fatty liver, a finding which experts of National Institute of Health, US, describe as “remarkable” considering this disease was hitherto thought to be one of the west.

Lt Gen Islam is new ISI chief

Islamabad, March 9
Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam was today appointed the chief of the powerful ISI by Pakistan government, ending months of speculation about a third extension to incumbent Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha whose tenure ends on March 18.
Islam, currently the military commander in Karachi, is considered close to army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. He served as Deputy ISI Director from 2008 to 2010.
“PM Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam, Corps Commander Karachi, as the new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence,” said a brief statement from the Premier’s office. His appointment ended speculation about a further extension to Pasha, who had been in the post since 2008 and got two extensions after reaching the age of retirement in 2010. Pasha is now due to retire on March 18.
Islam, who is due to retire in October 2014, comes from a military family of Punjab province. During his earlier stint in the ISI, he reportedly headed a section that dealt with domestic and counter-intelligence matters.
In his capacity as the head of the Karachi Corps, Islam played a key role in operations by security forces to control widespread ethnic and political violence in the financial hub of Karachi last year. In the past few weeks, reports said several generals were in the running for post of ISI chief, including Maj Gen Sahibzada Isfandiyar Ali Khan Pataudi, a Deputy Director General in the agency and an uncle of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.

The Congress today presented 36 newly elected legislators at the Raj Bhavan here in support of its claim that the party has majority support in the 70-member Assembly.

While 32 legislators produced before Governor Margaret Alva were Congress candidates, three Independent candidates and the solitary winner from the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (P) also pledged their support to the Congress. Besides turning up physically at the Raj Bhavan, the four legislators also submitted letters in support of a Congress government. The Governor later told the media that she was convinced that Congress had the numbers to stake claim to form the government. She would formally invite the leader of the Congress Legislature Party to form the government once the new leader is elected.
Harish Chander Durgapal, elected from Lal Kuan, Dinesh Dhanai, elected from Tehri and Manrti Parsad Naithani, elected from Devprayag and Pritam Singh Panwar of UKD (P), elected from Yamunotri were presented before the Governor along with their formal letters of support.

Hola Mahalla

Hola Mahalla at Anandpur Sahib
Hola Mahalla is a Sikh Olympics event which begins on the first day of the lunar month of Chet in theNanakshahi calendar. It most often falls in March,[1] and sometimes coincides with the Sikh New Year.Holla Mohalla is a Sikh festival celebrated in the month of March, usually after Holi. The word Moholla has been derived from an Arabic word “hal” which means “alighting or descending”. Mohalla is a Punjabi word which signifies an organized procession in the form of an army column. Furthermore, Holla Mohalla stands for “mock fight”. The festival is marked by Sikhs demonstrating martial arts in the form of simulated battles that are accompanied by war-drums and standard bearers. This annual festival is celebrated with great zeal and gusto in the north-eastern region of Punjab in Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib. The festival of Holla Mohalla does not occur on the same date every year.

Hola Mahalla in London
Hola Mohalla festivities may last from three days up to a week, and include sparring with wooden sticks and swords, demonstrations of skill with various types of weaponry, and exhibitions of archery and horsemanship. Both male and female Sikhs actively participate in year round martial arts training, and displays of sparring skill during festivities. Many participants array themselves in traditional warrior attire of chola, an over garment having a flared skirt, and a domalla style of turbanwrapped with chain mail and accessorized with one or more chakar, a kind of steel throwing ring. Festivities conclude with a Hola Mohalla parade featuring nagar kirtan and daring displays of Gatka, a kind of martial sword dance.
Tenth Guru Gobind Singh first introduced Hola Mohalla, a week long, spiritually oriented, martial arts festival which coincides withHoli, the Hindu festival of colors. Hola Mohalla is celebrated by Sikhs as an alternative to the licentious Holi holiday.
The date that Hola Mohalla is celebrated changes every year because it is partnered with Holi which is celebrated according to the fluctuating Hindu calendar. Hola Mohalla traditionally coincides with the Nanakshahi New Year which occurs in the month of Chet, or about mid March, according to the Gregorian calendar. Neighboring gurdwaras, Sikh centers of worship, may stagger the spacing of Hola Mohalla parades, which usually take place on Sundays, in order to coordinate sharing of floats and allow for participation of regional Gatka troupes whose exhibitions are the foremost feature. The result is that Hola Mohalla festivities often begin several weeks prior to, and may even extend past, the actual calendar date of the holiday.

Guru Gobind Singh started this festival as a day for Sikhs to practise their military exercises and hold mock battles.
Today, Sikhs celebrate by watching and partaking in martial arts parades, led by the nishan sahibs of the Gurdwaras. These are followed by poetry readings and music.
It is celebrated around March 17.

New Porsche 911 review

The fourth all-new platform for Ferry Porsche's brainchild. Eyes down, it's the new, 991 series version of the long-running 911 dynasty.

In the 911 zoo, the inmates nitpick like grooming gorillas. For 48 years and 700,000 sales (80 per cent of which are still on the road), Ferdinand Porsche’s design has engendered an obsessive loyalty. Each new generation of 911 derivative creates its own fanatics to make safe the legend of the rear-engined sports car from Stuttgart.
For this, the seventh generation and arguably only the fourth all-new 911 since 1963, an assembly of such journalistic Kremlin-watchers was arrayed at Santa Barbara in California. The spectacle drew public and the Californian Highway Patrol in equal measure, with boosts to the local economy from restaurant trades as well as juicy speeding fines.
It is easy to be intimidated by the 911 and its mythology of ossified derivatives, races and faces – I have been in the past. Notwithstanding that the latest 911 costs from £71,449 (from £81,242 for the Carrera S, and a whisker under 100 grand with all the options fitted to our test car), there’s also a school of thought that the 911 has long ceased to have any relevance as a sports car, is an overweight express for smug old men and that the Cayman R is the car that the 911 should have been. Porsche adamantly refutes such suggestions, but they’re out there.
So with the need to reclaim the high ground as the sharpest thing with a Porsche badge, the most obvious changes for the latest 911 are a wheelbase extended by 4in (100mm), the front track pushed outwards by 2in, a scant quarter of an inch (7mm) off the roof line and the body 2in (56mm) longer than its predecessor. This is a sleeker, lower and meaner 911. Parked alongside, the previous version looks ungainly but somehow more in keeping.
A new aluminium and galvanised steel body is intended to last another generation and 14 years, so it’s been future-proofed with 130lb of boron-steel cage around the fuel tank, massive sill and door pillars and front crash beams. In spite of that, the engineers have managed to save about 88lb over the previous model.
The suspension has been reworked, although the basic wishbone rear and strut-based front remains. Also new are a seven-speed manual gearbox, electronically assisted steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), which amounts to hydraulic rams mounted on the ends of each anti-roll bar, which jack the body up and down in corners.
There’s also a torque vectoring system, which stabilises the car on the brakes to enhance the dynamics, although there is still a stability system which does the same to help keep you out of the scenery. Myriad optional chassis tweaks include adjustable dampers, active engine mounts, carbon-ceramic brakes and an electronic differential lock.
The cabin is a huge improvement on previous 911 fare, which looked as though the components had been fired at the dash with a punt gun. This facia gives a nod to the old five-dial layout, but has more logic and feels classier. The centre console gains most, with a new screen and flush switches around the gear lever. The satnav is still hopeless and the fold-out cup holders ludicrous, but the seats are more comfortable and there’s a bit more leg room.
The engine fires with a guttural roar rather than the tinkling valvegear and whirring fans of yore, but it’s unmistakably a flat-six Porsche. It rides stiffly out of town but the new steering with optional Servotronic is light and direct. The optional PDK twin-clutch transmission is a massive improvement on its Tiptronic predecessors. Redesigned with nicer steering wheel paddles (£283) and a new gearlever, it will swap ratios as fast as you require, especially under full power with the Sport Plus mode engaged. In overrun it will automatically coast with the engine idling to reduce fuel consumption.
The seven-speed manual is basically the PDK ’box with slightly different third and seventh ratios. It isn’t a success, presenting a bewildering array of five vertical selection planes. It’s a measure of the potential confusion that there’s an interlock to prevent the selection of seventh from anything other than fifth and sixth. Despite the selected gear being displayed on the facia, it’s easy to get lost, while seventh is so overdriven that you end up changing down for motorway hills.
The new engines have reduced displacement to help achieve an almost 16 per cent overall improvement in economy. The standard Carrera delivers 350bhp from 3.4 litres, the Carrera S has 394bhp from 3.8 litres. We were only allowed to drive the latter and it’s addictive. While the torque curve is far from flat, it pulls mightily from 3,000rpm and sounds wonderful at peak revs, partly thanks to a noise generator. You don’t really want the switchable sports exhaust, which just adds an annoying boom. The abiding impression is of creamy power, comfort and a lack of road noise; this is the most refined 911 ever.
As ever, the handling is scalpel sharp and the steering, while lower geared and less manic than previous models, is direct, well weighted and with fine feedback. The chassis still bobs over bumps like 911s of old, but this one can be thrown through turns with a precision and verve that flatters the driver. Only occasionally do you find a slight hollowness in the steering feel, but it’s a very clever piece of engineering.
Everyone had their opinion, but one man who might be expected to know his onions is Cass Whitehead, former racer and lead instructor for the Californian Porsche Driving School. “We can debate this forever,” he says, “but each new 911 model gets faster, more powerful, more economical and more comfortable. What’s not to like?”
And what about the fine 997 GTS, the final incarnation of the previous generation? “Yeah, we thought that would run this car real close,” says Whitehead, “so we put them on the track and the new car just blew it away.” Whitehead waits a second before delivering his killer qualification: “My judgment is that’s mainly down to the chassis control systems.”
Each successive 911 model narrowed the gap between a good and a bad driver and now technology has almost eliminated it. Is this new model a better car than its predecessor? Indubitably. But is it a better 911? Here the 911 zoo begins a debate on just how scary a 911 should be. I think the 997 predecessor was marginally more of a Porsche.

RIVALS
Jaguar C-X16, about £70,000
High hopes for this fantastic-looking car based on the XK coupé chassis, with a supercharged V6 engine. It debuts in 2013, priced against the 911 and Cayman. Expect one of the most focused Jaguars for many years.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage S, from £102,500
Expensive, but one of the best examples of Aston’s VH platform cars, especially with a 4.7-litre engine. Lovely to look at and to drive, although gearbox is noisy and change quality is variable.
Audi R8, from £86,935
Efficient, good looking, reliable, engine in the back – much like the virtues of the 911, then. The Lamborghini-derived V10-engined version gets more plaudits, but the V8 version is a bit of gem. Avoid the R-tronic auto, though.
