270 cases disposed of at lok adalat

As many as 270 cases were disposed of and cheques worth Rs 1.34 crore were handed out during the mega lok adalat held at the Punjab and Haryana High Court today.
The adalat was held under the supervision of Acting Chief Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Satish Kumar Mittal, who is also the chairman of High Court Legal Services Committee.
The disposed of cases related to service matters, matrimony, accident compensation and workmen compensation. The insurance companies brought cheques valuing Rs 1.34 crore to be handed over to the claimants on the spot. 

Being supermom can hit your mental health

Working moms please take note: Trying to be a “supermom” by combining work and family life seamlessly could be bad for your mental health, scientists say.
Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle found that working is good for mothers’ mental health, but supermoms who want to be perfect at home as well as at work have higher rates of depression compared with those who let things slide.
“Ascribing to an ideal that women can do it all actually increased the level of depressive symptoms compared to women who are more skeptical of whether or not work and family can be balanced,” study researcher Katrina Leupp told LiveScience.
For their research, Leupp and her team analysed survey responses from 1,600 married women who participated in a large survey called the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.
In 1987, the women answered questions to gauge their support of women’s employment, including whether they agreed with statements such as “Women are much happier if they stay at home and take care of their children.” In 1992 and 1994, the now 40-year-old women answered questions about their symptoms of depression.
Like earlier studies, the survey data showed that women who worked outside the home had fewer symptoms of depression, perhaps because it gives them more social interaction, more varied activities and a larger income, Leupp said. 

Police to seek blacklisting of Healthyway

 UT SSP to write to HS to take up matter with Ministry of Home Affairs

Following large-scale frauds being committed by operators of Healthyway Immigration, the UT Police is all set to seek the blacklisting of the firm. For the purpose, the police will write to the UT Home Secretary, requesting him to take up the matter with the authorities concerned, especially the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The immigration firm is in the dock for duping scores of clients across the region on fake promises of sending them abroad. The prime accused, Amit Kakkar, was remanded to another two days’ police custody today and raids were on to arrest Kuldeep Singh, who is the mastermind behind the fraud.
UT SSP Naunihal Singh said the decision to seek the cancellation of the licence of the firm was taken after it came to light that certain agents of the company were still active in various cities of Punjab and were accepting applications for visa processing.
“It is a huge racket affecting hundreds of residents. The agents are still accepting forms raking in huge amounts of money. We will be writing to the UT Home Secretary to take up the matter with the MHA to blacklist the firm,” said Naunihal Singh.

‘Embassies being taken for a ride’

Besides forging bank documents, operators of Healthyway Immigration also deposited huge amounts in banks of their clients to enable documentation process while applying for a visa. The amounts were deposited to open fixed deposits and then arrange loan letters for the applicants applying for a student visa. Once the applications were sent to the embassy with the genuine bank documents, the agents used to withdraw all money they deposited with the banks. As a result, the embassies were taken for a ride in the absence of regular checks from the banks, the police said.
“It was all well managed and the modus operandi is such that even the embassies were not able to detect the crimes. The agents used to deposit the amounts with the banks, procure loan against a fixed deposit and then apply for visa,” said the police.
Police officials said hundreds of such visa applications processed by Healthyway were pending with the Canadian Embassy.
“To avoid such frauds, the embassies need to confirm from the banks whether the loan is in debit or credit as well as the nature of loan,” said an investigating officer.

4 more cases against immigration company

The police has registered four more cases against Deepak Arora, who runs an immigration company, on a charge of cheating.
Chetan Singh of Ropar district had complained to the police that Deepak Arora had struck a deal with him for sending him to Switzerland for Rs 1.20 lakh. He had given Rs 60,000 to Arora, but he was neither sent abroad nor was the amount returned to him.
In another complaint, Jagpal Singh of Chandigarh had stated that he had given Rs 2.50 lakh to Arora and Dheeraj Kumar for sending his son, Parminder Singh, to Switzerland. But he was not sent abroad and nor was the amount paid back to him.
The general manager of a Malout-based company, Bharat Bhushan, had complained to the SSP that he had given Rs 2.36 lakh to Arora for sending eight persons abroad. However, nothing was done and neither was the money given back to him.
In another case Harchand Singh of Bains village had complained that he had given Rs 1.20 lakh to the company for sending his son Pardeep Singh abroad. But neither was he sent and nor was the amount returned.
The police has registered cases under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and Section 24 of the Immigration Act in this regard.

NRI held for duping relative of Rs 22 lakh

Patiala, August 21
Fatehgarh Sahib police has arrested an non-resident Indian (NRI) from a Delhi airport on the charges of duping local residents by over Rs 22 lakh. The accused, who is currently settled in Italy and a proclaimed offender, had accepted money from the complainant for settling his sons abroad.
According to the cops, NRI Jarnail Singh was arrested from New Delhi airport on Friday. The police said Jarnail was declared a PO by a local court in 2010 following a case registered against him on March 23, 2009, at Sirhind police station.
According to complainant Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Attapur village of district Fatehgarh Sahib, he and one of his relatives Balwant Singh, a resident of Sanserwal (Patiala) had given Rs 22 lakh to Jarnail Singh, who is also their relative.
The complainants had stated that Jarnail Singh was a resident of, Himayupur (Sirhind) and was settled in Italy. “Jarnail Singh visited Punjab in February 2006 and allegedly demanded Rs 22 lakh for taking their sons to Italy”, the cops said.
As per the complaint, the victims had given him Rs 12 lakh in February, 2006, and the accused assured them that he would prepare the documents after visiting Italy. Sukhdev Singh said he invited Jarnail Singh to his daughter’s wedding, who reassured them to take their sons to Italy and further demanded remaining Rs 10 lakh. “We paid him the pending money but he never kept his words and instead returned to Italy”, they alleged in their complaint.
Later, Jarnail Singh started avoiding the victims on one pretext or the other and refused to return the money as well. On getting information that the NRI was visiting India, a police team comprising ASI Gurmeet Singh arrested the accused from a Delhi airport.

ਬਰਮਿੰਘਮ, 20 ਅਗਸਤ (ਪਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ)-ਵਿਲਜ਼ ਤੇ ਕੇਟ ਨੇ ਬਰਮਿੰਘਮ ਵਿਚ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਖੇਤਰ ਦਾ ਅੱਜ ਦੌਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਹ ਹਾਰੂਨ ਜਹਾਂ (21) ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿਦ ਅਲੀ (30) ਤੇ ਅਬਦੁੱਲ ਮਸਤਾਵੀਰ (31) ਜੋ ਕਿ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਕਾਰ ਹਾਦਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ 15 ਮਿੰਟਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ। ਸੇਂਟ ਜੇਮਜ਼ ਪੈਲੇਸ ਦੇ ਬੁਲਾਰੇ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਡਿਊਕ ਆਫ ਡੱਚਿਜ਼ ਨੇ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਵਿਲਜ਼ ਤੇ ਕੇਟ ਨੇ ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ, ਸਥਾਨਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੰਗਾਮੀ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਪਤਵੰਤਿਆਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੰਗਿਆਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਲੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਸਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਟਾਫ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਿਲੇ। ਜਿਸ ਵੀ ਥਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਜੋੜਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

Syria's Assad, Libya's Gadhafi both under pressure

It would appear international leaders have had enough of the frequent military reprisals in Syriaduring that nation's five-month-old uprising. The leaders of the United States, Britan, France, Germany, Canada and the European Union joined together Thursday, asking for Syrian President Bashar Assad to resign, citing the brutal repression of his people. A group of human rights observers from the United Nations went so far as to say what Assad is doing "may amount to crimes against humanity."
The latest military crackdown by the Assad government featured the use of gunboats for the first time. Perhaps sensing some international backlash, Assad told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday that military operations against protestors had ended. That seemed a hollow pledge after Syrian forces fired on protestors on Friday, killing at least 20.
Suncor, the Canadian energy company, said even though it has operations in Syria, it is not connected to the Assad regime.
To segue to events in Libya this week, The Rundown cedes the floor to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey, who compared Assad to Libya leader Moammar Gadhafi. There were reports this week that Gadhafi loyalists were using scud missiles for the first time as they try to hold back rebel forces that have been backed by NATO. There were also stories that Gadhafi troops were using a hospital as a base of operation.
Like Assad, though, the heat was on Gadhafi by week's end, as the rebels mounted a strong pushtoward the capital of Tripoli, the capital city being rocked by thunderous explosions. Citizens supporting the Gadhafi regime seemed unconcerned by the offensive.

England riots: Vancouver police reject comparisons

Developments following the riots in London last week took something of a Canadian twist, with the police in Vancouver quick to dismiss comparisons that arose between the London uprising and the destruction that followed the Stanley Cup loss by the Vancouver Canucks in June. The revolts were not the same, the Vancouver police said, and held a press conference at which a member of their force, who once served in London cited the differences as he saw them: Vancouver's rebellion sprung from sports and was controlled while London's erupted from social issues and was underscored by rising tension.
Meanwhile, back in London, officials were still sorting out the causes of the riots, many citing abroken social | contract and a moral collapse that British Prime Minister David Cameron said must be reversed.
If you were worried about the locations for next summer's Olympics, don't be. Those sites were protected by the police during the riots.
Meanwhile, the thousands of arrests have started, with at least a thousand people being charged, including a 16-year-old in the death of a senior citizen. Two men who attempted to incite riots via their Facebook page were given four-year sentences on Tuesday.

The Rundown's political roundup moves swiftly from the obvious to the bizarre.
Liberal Leader Bob Rae knows the obvious: his party has a challenge to recapture the interests of Quebec,once a bastion of Liberal support.
The bizarre? Someone hacked the website of the newspaper Le Devoir to post a story saying Quebec Premier Jean Charestwas dead. Hours later, a joking Charest proved the story to be false. That incident came days after former federal Conservative cabinet minister Lawrence Cannon said the politician who has most impressed him isn't Prime Minister Stephen Harper but Charest.
Elsewhere, the separatist movement continues to scuffle. The Bloc Quebecois faces a delay in selecting its new leader, to replace the departed Gilles Duceppe, who himself walked away from a job at the CBC after a disagreement on terms. And a group of Quebec sovereigntists has declared the Parti Quebecois all used up.
Federally, the NDP will not have its leader, Jack Layton, on hand for its first caucus meeting after the summer recess. Layton is taking a leave to get treatment for a second bout of cancer.
The party also alleged this week that the legacy fund for the G8 summit in 2010 was run out of the constituency office of cabinet minister Tony Clement, the MP for that area. The NDP says that allowed the government to avoid the scrutiny of the auditor general.

Kelowna shooting raises fear of gang war in B.C.

The killing of a Vancouver gang member at a casino in Kelowna, B.C., has stoked fears that a gang war could be underway even as the RCMP said it was too early to link the casino death to the subsequent shooting late Monday night of a man in Surrey, B.C., who has gang connections.
In Kelowna, Jonathan Bacon, along with his two brothers a member of the Red Scorpions gang, was fatally shot in broad daylight by a man wearing a balaclava on Sunday afternoon as he left a casino with five other people, one of them a Hells Angels member. Four of the other people were wounded, the CBC reporting one of the women in the car has become a quadriplegic because of the attack.
It is not clear if Bacon was the target of the killing but as the investigation unfolded, the RCMP dismissed talk that a statement was being made by the shooting.
The incident, in a favourite Canadian tourist destination, on an otherwise idyllic afternoon, stunned people in Kelowna. The town is taking steps to combat a known gangster presence in the area.
It is the second incident of violent crime to strike in the Okanagan Valley of B.C., known more for its boating lakes, fruit orchards and vineyards. On Aug. 3, the RCMP apprehended David Bobbitt, a fugitive wanted after a woman was discovered brutally beaten and assaulted in a Penticton, B.C., store Bobbitt operated.
In other Canadian criminal news, Romeo Cormier was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday following his conviction last month on kidnapping and sexual assault charges. Cormier, 63, was found guilty of abducting a woman from a shopping mall, keeping her in a room for a month and sexually assaulting her.
