Alberta premier announces new cabinet

Edmonton - Former Alberta Health Services chair Ken Hughes and former Calgary alderman Ric McIver were among the newcomers appointed to Alberta Premier Alison Redford's new cabinet on Tuesday.

Hughes was named Alberta's new energy minister, replacing Ted Morton, who lost his seat in the April 23rd election. McIver takes over the transportation portfolio.

Other newcomers include former Calgary principal Christine Cusanelli, who will head Tourism, Parks and Recreation and St. Albert businessman Stephen Khan, who is the new minister of enterprise and advanced education.

Some backbenchers were promoted on Tuesday: Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Wayne Drysdale becomes minister of infrastructure and West Yellowhead MLA and former PC party whip Robin Campbell will be the minister of aboriginal relations.

Some familiar faces return to cabinet: Doug Horner becomes minister of finance, in addition to his previous role as president of Treasury Board; Dave Hancock remains minister of human services; Fred Horne continues as minister of health, and Doug Griffiths will stay at municipal affairs.

Redford has combined some portfolios under her new cabinet structure. Environment and Sustainable Resource Development will be the responsibility of Diana McQueen, and Jonathan Denis will be solicitor general and minister of justice.

Thomas Lukaszuk, who served as education minister in Redford's first cabinet, was named deputy premier, but will not be responsible for any ministries. He will instead chair the operations policy committee.

"We are going to forge new policy, new directions. We're reorganizing government. We're going to change the role of the legislature," Redford told reporters after her new ministers were sworn-in. "I want to have a strong deputy premier by my side who's able to help advance that government agenda."

Redford also appointed seven assistant ministers, who including former cabinet minsters Greg Weadick, Frank Oberle and George VanderBurg. Assistant ministers will attend cabinet meetings when their area of responsibility comes up for discussion, Redford said.

While Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith criticized Redford for not appointing a Fort McMurray MLA to cabinet, she praised her for decreasing the number of ministers.

"Often what happens is that you see a premier wanting to reward so many allies that she increases the size of her cabinet," Smith said. "But I'm glad Ms. Redford resisted that temptation and has kept the cabinet to a reasonable size."

ਜੈਪੁਰ, 9 ਮਈ - ਟੀ ਵੀ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਸਤਿਆਮੇਵ ਜੈਯਤੇ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਭਰੂਣ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਜ਼ੋਰਦਾਰ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਖਿੱਚਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਦਾਕਾਰ ਆਮਿਰ ਖਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ 'ਚ ਇਸ ਅਪਰਾਧ 'ਤੇ ਰੋਕ ਥਾਮ ਲਈ ਫਾਸਟਟ੍ਰੈਕ ਕੋਰਟ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਣ ਦਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਗਹਿਲੋਤ ਦੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਨਿਵਾਸ 'ਤੇ ਆਮਿਰ ਨੇ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦਰਮਿਆਨ ਕਰੀਬ 40 ਮਿੰਟ ਗੱਲ ਹੋਈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਮਿਰ ਨੇ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਭਰੂਣ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਰੋਕਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਯਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਆਮਿਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਗਹਿਲੋਤ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਜੱਜ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨਗੇ। ਆਮਿਰ ਨੇ ਗਹਿਲੋਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਭਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਬੈਠਕ ਬੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਭਰੂਣ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਦਾ ਰੋਕ ਥਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵੀ ਕਦਮ ਚੁੱਕਣ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਕਦਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਧਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਗਹਿਲੋਤ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਆਮਿਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੁਣ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਗੇ।

'ਸੱਤਿਆਮੇਵ ਜੈਯਤੇ' ਸ਼ੋਅ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਨਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ਨੇ ਆਮਿਰ 'ਤੇ ਲਾਇਆ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼

ਮੁੰਬਈ, 9 ਮਈ (ਏਜੰਸੀ)-ਅਦਾਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਖੀ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ ਆਮਿਰ 'ਤੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੱਤਿਆਮੇਵ ਜਯਤੇ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਾ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਚੋਰੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਰਾਖੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਿ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਾ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ, ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਅਸਲੀ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਭਾਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਰਾਖੀ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਆਮਿਰ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਾ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਦੀ ਨਕਲ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਆਮਿਰ ਖਾਨ ਪ੍ਰੋਡਕਸ਼ਨ ਕੰਪਨੀ) ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਚੋਰੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੇ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਦੀ ਰੂਪ ਰੇਖਾ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਮੇਲ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਾ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਇੰਨੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਜੁੜ ਗਈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਲੈਣੀ ਪਈ ਸੀ। ਰਾਖੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਮਿਰ ਲਈ ਸ਼ੁੱਭ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਮਿਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਆਮਿਰ ਇਕ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।

ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ, 9 ਮਈ - ਨਵੰਬਰ 2012 ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਸ ਫਾਰ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਅਤੇ ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਟੂਡੈਂਟਸ ਫੈਡਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਦਾਇਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ। ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਕਿ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1984 ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹਫਤੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਸੰਗਠਿਤ ਤੇ ਯੋਜਨਾਬੱਧ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਕਨਵੈਨਸ਼ਨ ਤਹਿਤ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ। ਇਸ ਮੰਤਵ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖਸ ਫਾਰ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਤੋਂ ਦਸਤਖਤੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਦਾ ਆਰੰਭ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਇਕੱਠਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਆਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤਹਿਤ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1984 ਦੇ ਪੀੜਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਦਿਵਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਜਦੋ ਜਹਿਦ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਸਿੱਖਸ ਫਾਰ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1984 ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਸੰਗਠਿਤ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਗਠਨ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1984 ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਦਾਇਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਡੇਅ ਨਗਰ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਮੌਕੇ 'ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਨਸਲਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ', ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਸਿੱਖਸ ਫਾਰ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਆਰਡੀਨੇਟਰ ਜਤਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਹੀ 10 ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸੀ। ਸਿੱਖ ਫਾਰ ਜਸਟਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਸਲਾਹਕਾਰ ਅਟਾਰਨੀ ਗੁਰਪਤਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ੰਪੰਨੂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਦਾਇਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚਲੀਆਂ ਸਮੇਂ-ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਵੰਬਰ 1984 ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦਿਵਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਕਾਮ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਟੋਰਾਂਟੋ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ 'ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਨਸਲੀਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ' ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਯੂਰਪੀਨ ਯੂਨੀਅਨ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਜਾਈ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਜਿਥੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਜਾਣਗੇ।

ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਪਾਏ ਗਏ ਮਾਸੂਮ ਬੱਚੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ।

 ਲੰਡਨ, 9 ਮਈ - 13 ਸਾਲਾ ਇਕ ਬੱਚੀ ਸਮੇਤ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡਰਗ, ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ 9 ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਗਰੋਹ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਵਰਪੂਲ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੇ ਅੱਜ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦ ਕਿ ਰੁਚਡੇਲ ਦੇ 2 ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਕਾਮਰ ਸਹਿਜ਼ਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਲਿਆਕਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਤੇ ਅਜੇ ਮੁਕੱਦਮਾ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਵਰ੍ਹੇ 2008 ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਟੇਕਅਵੇਅ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸਨ, ਜਦ ਕਿ 24 ਤੋਂ 59 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੱਕ ਦੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸੀ।
ਓਲਡਹੈਮ ਦੇ ਇਕ 59 ਸਾਲਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕਈ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਗੁਪਤ ਰੱਖੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੀਰ ਹੁਸੈਨ 25, ਅਬਦੁਲ ਅਜ਼ੀਜ਼ 41, ਅਬਦੁਲ ਰੌਫ 43, ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਸਾਜਿਦ 35, ਮੁਮੰਦ ਅਮਿਨ 45, ਹਾਮਿਦ ਸਫੀ 22, ਅਬਦੁਲ ਕਾਇਓਮ 44, ਲਿਆਕਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ 42 ਅਤੇ ਇਕ 59 ਸਾਲਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਨਸ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।
ਰਮਦਾਨ ਫਾਊਂਡੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਚੀਫ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਸਾਫੀਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਧਸ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਡੀ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ। ਮਾਨਚੈਸਟਰ ਦੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਚੀਫ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਨਸਲੀ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਬਲਕਿ ਵੱਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੁਣਵਾਈ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਫੋਰਸ ਲਗਾਈ ਗਈ ਸੀ, ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਦੋਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਟੇਕਅਵੇਅ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਤੇ 100 ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਭੰਨ-ਤੋੜ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ।

Russian plane goes missing in Indonesia

JAKARTA: A new Russian-made civilian plane carrying 50 people went missing in Indonesiawhile flying over mountains Wednesday during a demonstration flight for potential buyers and journalists, officials said. 

Search and rescue teams were heading to the area just south of the capital, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Transportation. Bad weather, however, forced at least two helicopters to turn back. 

The Sukhoi Superjet-100 took off from Jakarta's Halim Perdanakusuma Airport at 2:21 p.m. 

It dropped off the radar 21 minutes later near the Salak mountain range, after the crew asked air traffic control for permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 meters to 1,800 meters). 

No explanation was given for the sudden change of course. Though drizzling at the time, it was not stormy. 

"I saw a big plane passing just over my house,'' Juanda, a villager who lives near the 7,200-foot- (2,200-meter)- mountain, told the local station TVOne. 

"It was veering a bit to one side, the engine roaring,'' she said. ``It seemed to be heading toward Salak, but I didn't hear an explosion or anything.'' 

Rear Marshal Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency, said several diplomats from the Russian Embassy, potential buyers from major Indonesian airlines and journalists were on board what was supposed to be a 50-minute demonstration flight, the second of the day.

Together with the Russian crew, the plane was carrying 50 people, said Sunaryo, from PT Trimarga Rekatama, the company that was responsible for the guest list. Like many Indonesians, both Sunaryo and Daryatmo use only one name. 

Though the air search was called off by early evening, soldiers, police and members of the air force had joined the land-based rescue efforts. They were expected to continue through the night, but the terrain was rough and difficult to navigate after darkness fell. 

``Hopefully they'll be able to reach the location tonight,'' Daryatmo said. 

Developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi in co-operation with Western partners, the plane is the first completely new airliner designed by Russia since the Soviet collapse. 

Russia has hoped that the short- to mid-range jet, which made its maiden run in 2008, would help it break into international markets dominated by Boeing and Airbus. 

It was on the fourth stop of a six-nation ``Welcome Asia!'' road show after having already been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan. It was supposed to head next to Laos and Vietnam.
