Bill C-35 passed in Canada to amend Immigration Act

Licensed paralegals will be able to appear before immigration tribunals, when Bill C-35, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, comes into effect. The legislation is designed to increase consumer protection by improving the regulation of immigration consultants. The Law Society made a submission to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration in November, requesting that the bill be amended to permit paralegals licensed by the Law Society to provide immigration consulting services.

The bill received royal assent on March 23. It is anticipated the bill will come into effect in the coming months.
