An Indian citizen who lives outside India qualifies as a Non-resident Indian (NRI). A 'Person Residing Outside India' is someone who stays outside India for employment or business or vocation, or for any other purpose, indicating intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.

• Who is a Person of Indian Origin (PIO)?
Any person who is a of any country (not a Pakistani / Bangladeshi) is deemed to be a Person of Indian origin^ if -
1. he held an Indian Passport at any time, or
2. he or either of his parents/grand parents was a citizen of India, or
3. he/she is a spouse of an Indian citizen or a person as referred to in i or ii
