India trains blocked in Bhopal disaster protest

3 December 2011
BHOPAL — Thousands of survivors of the world’s worst industrial accident have blocked trains through a central Indian city to demand more compensation.
Saturday’s protest is on the 27th anniversary of the disaster in Bhopal, where a Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked gas that killed some 15,000 people and maimed tens of thousands.
Activist Rachna Dhingra says police charged at the protesters with sticks in trying to stop them from occupying Bhopal’s five train lines Saturday and that three people were injured.
Protesters say India’s government settled for too little in a 1985 settlement for $470 million. They’re demanding $8.1 billion for the more than 500,000 people affected.
They also want Dow Chemicals dropped as a sponsor of the London Olympics. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001.
