Rohtak surgeons perform rare surgery on teenager to remove schwannoma

ROHTAK, (INDIA): A team of dental surgeons of the post graduate institute of dental sciences (PGIDS), Rohtak has performed a rare surgery to remove schwannoma (swelling of nerve) in left side of neck behind the jaw partially extending into the brain recently.

The surgeons including head of department (HoD), Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Dr Virendra Singh, HoD, Neurology, Dr Ishwar Singh and Anesthesiologist Dr Mamta performed the surgery on a 19 years old patient Krishan Kumar, hailing from Jhajjar town who is recuperating at the hospital now.

Dr Virendra said that the patient was suffering from swelling of nerve (tumor) in the left side of the neck reported in PGIDS last month. The tumor which was located in very sensitive area of brain and the patient hearing capacity was impaired due to this swelling of nerve. He further told that a little traction of injury to that area may be fatal to the patient.

"The patient was admitted in the PGIDS on July 16, 2012 and after meticulous planning he was taken up for surgery by the team of surgeons. The critical surgery for successful excision of the schwannoma took seven hours. Postoperatively the patient is well and there is no pain now", the doctor said. Vice Chancellor of Pt. B.D.Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak Dr Sukhbir Singh Sangwan and Principal PGIDS Dr Sanjay Tiwari congratulated the team of doctors for successfully performing the rare surgery.
